Glide is ablout the coolest place in the world to volunteer, if you want to help some of the most needy people on the West Coast. It is a San Francisco institution.

www.glide.com

They hand out bags of groceries every morning, and, this morning they ran out of food. For the first time in 22 years, they were forced to turn people away. Over 100 people walked away empty-handed.

Damn...

2. That has become a chronic problem here in flyover country
mostly since about this time last year. Need is way up and donations are down...which is understandable.

It'd take me an hour to drive up from the Valley, but I'd enjoy a day in the city starting with the service at Glide and then brunch at the Buena Vista. It's gotta be tough times in the Tenderloin when they run out of food.

5. I figured you would get it.
I can understand why soup kitchens and inner-city programs across the Country could run out of food in these Hard Times, but Glide?

6. It's sure worth it..
It's where folks can learn the meaning of the word "diversity." (And rediscover their goosebumps and tear ducts.)

9. Fair Food Foundation is being shuttered
They provide fresh, sustainably grown food for low income urban communities. Their prime sponsors had their money managed by Bernie Madoff and it just went *poof*.

And JEHT, a $30 million a year fund that provided legal justice and participatory democracy grants closed for the same reason.

13. Madoff is almost as bad as Bush. He knew it was a ponzi scheme
and he did it anyway, no matter who gets hurt. Shame on him.

10. I saw them handing the food out on KTVU as
I was leaving for work this morning and I had a feeling that would happen. I'm sorry I was right.

Our department is foregoing a Christmas party and donating food and money instead. I hope others who can/will do the same.

12. That's horrible. I gave $50 to our local food bank as one of three
Christmas charities, and I know they will turn it into $850 worth of food, enough to feed a couple of families for a month. People going hungry is a bad sign of more difficult times to come, too.
