General Electric wins three bln dlr Iraqi power deal

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US conglomerate General Electric Co. said Tuesday it has been awarded a three billion dollar power generation contract by war-wracked Iraq.

"We are honored that the government of Iraq has chosen GE to support its efforts to expand the country's energy infrastructure," said John Krenicki, chief executive of GE Energy, the power generation arm of General Electric.

The Iraqi electricity ministry and GE Energy have signed an agreement for power generation equipment and services valued at nearly three billion dollars to provide electricity to support Iraq's future economic development, the company said in a statement.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Tuesday asked General Electric to shorten the time to complete the establishment of power stations in Iraq, unveiling the government’s intention to sign new contracts with the same company and the Siemens Company.

“The premier signed a contract to establish new power stations to produce electricity with a total capacity of 700 Megawatt between the electricity ministry and the General Electric during a ceremony attended by Deputy Premier Rafeaa al-Eissawi and Minister of Electricity Karim Wahied,” said a statement released from al-Malki’s office received by Aswat al-Iraq.

“The premier thanked US Ambassador to Iraq Rayan Crocker for facilitating the negotiations,” the statement added.
