5. Republican spin..
Subpoenas premature...need to go thru 3,000 documents first before demanding subpoenas..
White House made reasonable offer..

8. LMAO - "please don't subpoena without compelling reason
....and not political amusement grounds"

12. Conyers speaking
this is not a sideshow or any other reason other than the following

giving a list of reasons why he wants subpoenas under oath...otherwise they could talk in a pub and would not accomplish getting the truth

17. Conyers : "hold these subpoenas in advance of needing them"
Annoying person that keeps calling it a witch hunt asking for more assurance that it isn't a witch hunt

Conyers telling him he won't do anything that would demean the committee...and what they are voting on today is merely a back-up

23. Talking point against subpoenas
and calling it all a partisan witch hunt

Gee...let's not "insult" the executive branch until giving them a chance to tell their story

28. Conyers is patiently explaining to the nitwit that
they can't get to the interviews without the subpoenas if Bush expects Rove/HM to tesitfy not under oath, behind closed doors and without a transcript

and the nitwit keeps wanting to assert that Bush will allow the interviews though...

as if Conyers' point was not registering with him

9. I truly have no idea
I'm posting this in the hopes that some DU'ers will be able to follow what happens. This is the description of the hearing:

Subcommittee Meeting to Consider Subpoena Authorization

Consideration of authorizing the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee to issue subpoenas to the following individuals to secure testimony at a hearing, and to obtain documents from these individuals, as well as unredacted documents from the Department of Justice and the White House, pursuant to the Committee’s investigation concerning the recent termination of United States Attorneys and related subjects.

13. Conyers takes floor

'This is being done for the following:

We had a deadline that went unresponded to for 5 days.
We were offered a conversation with no oath or records..but I could do that at the local pub if I wanted that.
This is not going to operate under whim..
Belief abt executive privilege preventing us from calling witnesses is not accurate in my belief.

Authorize the subpoenas today and trust me that I will not issue them if I do in a reckless manner"

26. Basically...
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 09:46 AM by Sir Jeffrey
Reps are saying "the issuance of subpoenas is premature" and "we need time to go through the documents" and "Clinton did it too".

Conyers is saying "We need to vote unanimously on this because we need to find out what happened" and "We won't issue subpoenas unless we have to" and, my favorite, "we can have a 'conversation' at the local bar. what we need is people talking under oath with a transcript"

on edit typed "conservation" instead of "conversation". it is early

47. Important: Approved by voice vote. No roll call vote was demanded.
If the GOPhers were confident that opposing subpoenas was a political advantage, even with their own core constituencies but particularly in challenging Dem seats, then they'd demand a roll call vote. They didn't. Looks like the political winds are at the backs of the Democrats on this one. (Good thing - since they haven't shown much ability to tack into the wind like the close-hauled GOP.)
