This was posted by mooseandsquirrel in editorials, but I thought it would get more reads in general discussion:
http://moose-and-squirrel.com/gene/gene.htmlPresident-elect Barack Obama’s nomination of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state marks yet another setback for the professional Clintonphobes of the Washington celebrity press. Also, however, it is an opportunity to advance the peculiar group narrative these courtiers have peddled about the Clintons since 1992. In choosing Clinton, Obama stressed the respect she commands in foreign capitals; also her intellect, hard work and pragmatism. “I’m a strong believer in strong personalities and strong opinions,” Obama said. “I think that’s how the best decisions are made.” So much for six months of feverish speculation, prognostication, amateur psychoanalysis and professional character assassination from the press. Angered by their bête noire’s refusal to end her presidential campaign until the voters had their say, pundits predicted that Clinton would sabotage Obama. She’d scheme to upstage him at the Democratic convention and steal the nomination. Failing that, she and Bill would conspire to help make John McCain president so she could run in 2012.
As usual, the looniest stuff came from The New York Times’ resident clairvoyant, Maureen Dowd. As late as Aug. 20, she satirically depicted Clinton and Mc-Cain meeting secretly to plot Obama’s doom. Get this excerpt:
“‘They’re all pinko Commies,’ McCain laughs. ‘Especially since they deserted me for The Messiah. Seriously, Hill, that Paris-Britney ad you came up with was brilliant. I owe you.’
“ Looking pleased, Hillary expertly downs another shot. ‘His secret fear is being seen as a dumb blonde,’ she says. ‘He wants to take a short cut to the top and pose on glossy magazine covers, but he doesn’t want to be seen as a glib pretty boy.’”
