For far too long, the abomination that is the Republican Party has told us that they are the guardians of "Family Values." Their claim goes so far beyond a lie as to be, not just absurd, but insane.
My neighbor is a died-in-the-wool Liberal Democrat who spends much of her life caring for her 97 year old mother and doing everything possible to keep her alert, healthy and happy. Doesn't that fit the definition of "family values?"
I have siblings and many first cousins whose liberal parents labored their entire lives to see that their children got decent educations. Isn't that a "family value?"
What has really happened over the past few decades is that conservatives have told us that we don't value our families and that we are not "real Americans."
The reality is that those who have perpetuated this myth are the scum of the earth. Do you really need the likes of Bush/Cheney/Rove/Gingrich/DeLay -- and so many others like them -- telling you that your moral values are less than theirs?
How could any sane person believe the words and "ideas" spewed forth by people like Pat Robertson, James Dobson and countless charlatans like them? How can anyone fail to understand that what they're hearing is the preaching of pure, unadulterated hatred?
For this moment in history, the Republican Party is defeated, disorganized, in disarray and licking their wounds. But they haven't gone away. They'll be back with a vengeance and they will once again claim the moral high ground of being the only ones who possess "family values."
It saddens me that far too many people will, once again, buy this horribly grotesque lie.
The reality is that no political, or religious entity has a corner on "family values." It is a personal attribute. When you hear the words "family values" come out of someone's mouth, kick your skepticism into gear, and be wary of those who claim to be "holier than thou."
