3. It is, the Indians fired on them as in the Indian Navy
and NATO is starting patrols, fifth fleet is getting involved

And the French have called for conference to dot the I and cross the T on the legal bounds to start solving this on a serious way

And it will have to include draining the swamp quite frankly

5. Lessee here:
SEALS, SBS, Royal Marine Commandos, German SPECOPS, Israeli SPECOPS...how many others? Lots of boats and ships with lots of guns. E2-C Hawkeyes that can scan huge areas of ocean and see your bellybutton lint. AEGIS.

And they can't take down these guys?

Something's hinky.

6. Basically until now they haven't been a big enough problem for anybody to care
The Somali pirates have basically been a "shiver me timbers" joke until a few days ago. Now that the pirates have peoples' attention, both with the hijacking of the arms shipment headed to Kenya an most recently the capture of that supertanker, maybe the world community will start to take action against them. On the other hand, the word "Somalia" conjures nightmarish visions for policymakers, so maybe not.

7. It is legally hinky
the french called for a meeting to ahem fix that, and get the damn authority to do what needs doing

I am betting, once that happens, convoys will be making a comeback

We don't even need aircraft carriers, but corvettes can do the job, quite frankly, with some choppers

9. forget the nations, time for the shippers
to protect themselves before we start bombing innocent people, which is bound to happen. The saudis can afford to hire someone. A cruise ship was attacked some months back, and they escaped using speed and a sonic repellant

11. Merchantmen cannot be armed
international law, goes back to the 1950s and in a few cases you don't want to be armed anyway... CNG, bullets, compromised containers, think big boom

13. Won't happen
the 1950s treaty took five years to negotiate.

Though they said today the companies should do exactly that, arm their ships.

But we have an administration filled with idiots

Mark my words, if need be, after Obama comes in NATO will actively patrol those waters, together with India and China

31. I'm curious as to what you're implying here.
Are you trying to say that * put Somalis up to be pirates because HE wanted to change some obscure law? * did that? Convinced the Somalis to become pirates in 92 when their fishing grounds were being overrun by huge commercial fishing boats?

Too funny.

That there are loads of merchantmen out there with well-concealed and well-equipped arms lockers...

16. I know that they don't and the few that have armed themselves
have gotten crew killed

Now as I said, think CNG, bullet, container.

There are some ships where you don't want even radios in the wrong place

Now there are a few out there that are armed, some very well armed... but they are the exception, not the rule

Now this may change, especially with piracy on the upswing world wide.

No, it is NOT just a somali coast problem

As I said in another thread, if they gave me a cruise ship ticket in the CARIBEAN I'd stay home

imagine this person coordinates the defense of the ship.

19. You can count them with the fingers of one hand
by International treaty merchantmen are not armed

This is actually an issue since some companies WANT to hire mercs, err security experts, to keep them safe

But there are a myriad of issues regarding armed people on board any civilian ship

The Islamists are probably being bankrolled by the "Powers", and the I's are not nice people.
They believe in sharia. I would let the ships go and head for somewhere.

How canst ye badmouth them bloody lads who are capturin' those ships off of Africa and overlook that blood thirsty crew of privateers that run the great ship of state in yer own country right now, matey?
