Warming World is Harming Crops - but offset by genetic crops and better farming
Warming World is Harming Crops
Written for the web by Jason Kobely, Internet News Producer

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory said warming global temperatures are eating away at the world's bread basket and cereal crops.

The research is the first to examine how much global food production has been harmed by climate change.

The study said that the global temperature increase means 40 million fewer metric tons of barley, corn, rice, sorghum, soybeans and wheat are produced around the world each year.

That means an annual loss of $5 billion.

Still, the researchers said the damage from climate change has been more than offset by production gains from genetic engineering of crops and better farming techniques.

1. Score 1 for the global warming argument, but
promoting genetically engineered seeds is like condoning the poisoning the world at the same time.

2. The World Bank's own studies proved the efficiency of using organic methods
And overall, the problem is really factory farming and the distribution of produce.

How much corn is wasted growing feed for cows (when it's not healthy for cows) and for corn syrup (when it's not healthy for humans)?

How much more efficient could fertile ground be used growing crops like hemp, as opposed to cotton?

How stupid is it to have countries growing steroidal-looking, tasteless strawberries in the dead of winter?

How many people have lawns that could be garden plots?

3. The LLNL is just another government-run whore for goddamn corporations
who think they can play god and patent our entire food supply, as far as I'm concerned.

So now they want to use climate change as an excuse to push their agenda. Great. :eyes:

5. Bogus.
what gains in production from GMO crops? and there aren't any GMOs that are drought tolerant or heat tolerant. they're supposedly in the pipeline, but not on the market. organic crops do much better than conventional and GMO in drought conditions due to the fact they're in a healthier soil and are a healthier plant and better equipped to handle the stress.
