White House staff question

A buddy of mine at work asked me if the White House staff (i.e. cooks, cleaning staff, grounds persons etc.) carry on to the next administration. I had to tell him I had no idea. Any answers?

1. A lot of them stay, I think.

From stories and interviews I remember seeing and reading, some staff members have served a number of administrations.

2. Great thread earlier today, maybe it's on the home page, about

the old butler who had started in the WH I think with FDR. Wonderful story. He only retired not that long ago.

3. I think I read somwwhere that sometimes the chef is changed,

but the key person is the WH "Butler" maybe he has a different name, is in charge of all staff, invaluable for continuity.

5. Yes, they stay in their jobs.

There was a behind the scenes of the White House documentary (Clinton Era) that showed all of the people who had worked for the administrations. It showed an older gentleman who had been the "clock winder" for around 40/50 years. His job was to keep all of the clocks wound and in working order. He had quite a few stories. I work with a lady (my second job) who retired from the White House and had worked for Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and Hillary. She said that Palin's behavior would not be tolerated in Washington. These are the people who have all the good stories.

6. Yeah, they're all civil service employees, not political appointees

A very few at the top of the 'house staff' are appointees, but for the most part they're career employees.

The chef is a notable appointee. The rumor this time is that Rick Bayliss is in the running (that's a big name if you're a foodie).
