They were so loud that the dogs started howling and I ran outside to see what was up (literally). I thought it would be a plane but no.... I counted them, 8. It's not that unusual to see Apaches here because I'm near a Boeing plant that builds them, but dang! I've never seen that many.

I immediately thought of people in rural Afghanistan who hear them flying overhead and the fear they must instill. I wonder if one ever gets used to the roar?

Edited for rotten spelling.

lots of A10 warthogs over us. My daughter just loves to see those jets go over. At least they aren't shooting at us.

2. They were flying Ospreys over my 'hood a few months ago
Pictures on the wall went cockeyed, the cat dived under the bed and refused to come out for hours, yarn fell off the shelf.

Those things are LOUD. If they don't manage to hit anybody with guns or bombs, those damn things will rattle 'em to death.

3. Similar experience years ago
Back in 1990 I was outside working on my old '49 Desoto. Heard this rumbling coming out of the south, getting louder and louder. Got incredibly loud, and coming in low over the tree tops I saw this B-52 fly into view. Flew almost directly overhead, low and slow and loud as hell. Low enough that I clearly saw the co-pilot, waved at him and he waved back. Plane flew on north into the center of town, circled a couple of times and came back south, disappeared over the southern horizon.

The local paper next day had a picture and article, found out that the plane was on a training mission from Louisiana and had gotten lost. I should say so, it was two states, and a good thousand miles off course:rofl:

I also used to live in a remote area of the Ozarks that flyers out of Ft. Scott used for practice maneuvers. Nothing like being jolted awake by a fighter jet screaming in at tree top level. They also used to bomb the local bridge with bags of flour. I had just gotten on the bridge when a couple of jets coming screaming down the lake in formation and WHOOMP, WHOOMP, hit the middle with their flour bombs. Would have really sucked if I'd been out there in the middle. As it was I suddenly got to deal with a flour fog going over the bridge.

4. Many many years ago
I lived at the end of the runway at an Air Force base in Georgia. The B-52's took off right over our house - forget treetop level, they weren't much above housetop level. Things fell off shelves, babies cried, whole place shook. I, too have waved at the crew and had them wave back. Funny to run into someone else who has done that.

Wat

5. We get those BIG muthas (Hueys??) with the twin rotors over here on occasion.
I think they go from the Van Nuys Reserve facilities over to Port Hueneme.

9. CH-46 "Sea Knight" or CH-47 "Chinook"
Sea Knight

Its big brother, the Chinook

"Huey" commonly referred to the Bell UH-1 "Iroquois" which were Bell models 204 & 205 variants

8. Out in Hawaii I always heard the loud Hueys going by on training missions around Oahu
I also remember the loud KC-135's taking off and landing at Grand Forks Air Force Base.

11. No you don't get used to their roar.
Been here 22 years and have training exercises from the local base flying overhead all the time and more in the last 4 years. I know what they are, I can hear them coming but still have to go check. Mostly because they are so low they push the tree tops down, make the house shake and send every animals running for cover. When they are over the woods across the street it can be fun to watch them, they almost seem to be doing a helicopter ballet, but over the house sucks every time. I worry when they are so low that one is going to hit a house one day.

13. have you ever not heard the silent ones?
I was fishing on the gulf of Mexico one nite and had a DEA copter light the boat up. Never heard a sound, never saw a light. For about 2 minutes it was daytime again.

14. I was terrified yesterday when
some sort of a military helicopter flew over me as I was out for a walk. It kept circling over the same area for about five minutes. It was so loud and imposing; I certainly do feel for people who are affected by war every day, and I hope we get out of our wars soon.
