Palin breaks with McCain on gay marriage amendment
In an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network, the Alaska governor said she had voted in 1998 for a state amendment banning same sex marriage and hoped to see a federal ban on such unions.

Wait, didn't she say in the debate that she "tolerated" gays?

2. Pandora's Box.
McCain can't control her and we haven't even had the election yet. And with shadowy Todd pulling the strings from backstage, it is very disturbing indeed to think she could assume the Vice Presidency.

3. Bold as brass, that one, eh??
She knows her time "onstage" will be brief, and she's got to lay the groundwork for her run in '12... She's willing to throw Grandpa from the Train...if it boosts her own future..

I can see her quitting as Governor, and sticking around DC to feather her nest a bit more.. If she goes back, she'll be the "LOSER", who has to finish her term...but if she resigns, with a wink-wink, and starts building some "lower 48" cred, she's a shoo-in for '12, and she knows it...

Probably Todd will run to finish her term (he's running things anyway).....or if Stevens manages to "win" another term, but ends up going to the slammer, I could see Sarah appointing HERSELF as his replacement..

5. The Republican Party is done with Sarah Palin
and her attempt to seize the national political stage will go down in history as a bad joke.

In 2012 the biggest threat we will face is a new onslaught of pro-choice "moderate" Republicans.

6. Which Party?
Yes, she's worn out her welcome with the Bobo Brooks and Peggy Nooners...the "east coast elite" and "fiscal" conservatives. But then this party never healed and fully got behind Gramps either...the scars of the primaries lived on and will erupt after the election...even if Gramps were to somehow steal it.

Sarah Barracuda's a big hit with the fundies and far right...and she knows it. She wss pushed onto the ticket and she's been responsible for a lot more interest and money flowing into what was a dead campaign. Even in loss there's a victory...once unleashed from the campaign, Palin will become the darling of the hate radio and religious radio set...and will stay visible that way.

I don't see her going away at all...I see the GOOP veering further to the right.

8. The fundies will be effectively, if temporarily, marginalized
barring a nuclear terrorist attack on an American city, which actually isn't that unlikely in coming years.

Why would the GOP veer farther right? A losing proposition.

9. I agree with wtmusic. Palin will be gone and, thankfully, forgotten by 2012.
Of course, that is predicated entirely on an Obama win in November. If Obama wins in 2008 there is a damn good chance he will be running against Gen. David Petraeus in 2012. That's why the endorsements by Gens. Colin Powell and Wesley Clark look better and better every day.

If Obama wins, Palin will be marginalized very quickly. Her pitiful case will be a lesson for future candidates on both sides: Vetting .. your political life depends on it.

10. The Blame Game...
Not long ago, I heard someone say that most GOOP homes must not have mirrors cause they can never look at themselves and accept or take blame. The repugnican primaries was a showcase of the rifts that had developed in the party...turning their selection process into a demolition derby and in the end Gramps was the only one standing...and primarily by default. A real telling tale was that in the primaries after he secured the nomination, his vote totals declined...he was only drawing 75% of the vote...and a depressed one at that. Not a good sign. Add to that his inept campaign that constantly blunders (we've been extremely fortuante)...and the post mortem will be full of excuses and deniability for all.

The fundies may be marginalized to the "mainstream", but they sure aren't in this election. Many see Palin as being the bright light...the only reason to support the ticket and she will be abosolved of any blame...it'll all come down on Gramps...who they never really liked to begin with. He wasn't a "true believer". Their coalition will regroup as not only Palin, but Hucklebee have risen in profile through this process.

And don't count out the Faux Noise/hate radio crowd...they're sute to be in total denial mode. They've already started the mantra that the party isn't "conservative enough" or is losing because they abandoned "conservative principals" (WTF those are???) and gladly blame others for losses...or just live in a tin foil world where the Democrats stole the elections. Moderates don't stand a chance...they'll be drowned out or shouted down.

Yes...a very losing proposition, but I don't think many of these people are getting the message yet. The "big tent" has frayed...and I see a lot of similarities with the fractionalism they're facing as with the Democrats of the 70's and 80's...and we saw how long it took us to figure things out.

Cheers...
