Chris Matthews, you done good tonight. You have never made a secret about being a committed Catholic, yet you showed your heart tonight, your ability to see nuance (something Catholics actually can do doctrinally), and a bold move away from the fundies.

When John McCain made those asinine statements about abortion and made derisive air quotes around the words "women's health" you, Tweety, called him on it and would not let go. You said McCain sounded cruel. And you wouldn't let go.

I think he sees things a lot differently these days and I attribute much of that to his associates qnd their commentaries. I suppose he's smart enough to realize which way the political wind is blowing and he's thinking about the future of Hardball, too. But, for a guy who was a big McCain fan - predicting that PA was no doubt going to go for McCain - he sure has come around these past few months.

I'm just sayin'. He's never going to be my favorite news commentator, but I like to give credit where credit is due.

Chris Matthews is a funny kind of guy. We get real exasperated at him here at DU, but a lot of us also find his quirks kind of endearing. He gets man-crushes -- I said months ago that Obama is his new man-crush.

Every so often he surprises me pleasantly. This was one of them.
