OK, Maureen Dowd's Sunday, Oct. 12 column is blithering idiocy. What's wrong with her?
Does this make sense to you? I understand what she is doing here. And I think she's nuts. An excerpt:

In high school, I translated swatches of Julius Caesar’s “The Battle for Gaul” from Latin to English while nibbling cheese crackers. To boost the felicitous new trend toward Latin, I enlisted Gary D. Farney, an associate professor of history at Rutgers University, to translate (loosely and creatively) from English to Latin “The Battle of Gall,” my take below on why the hyperventilating Republicans are not veni, vidi, vici-ing.

Bellum Gallium

Manes Julii Caesaris paucis diebus aderant — “O, most bloody sight!”

Rabidi subcanes candidati, pretendant “no orator as Brutis is,” ut “stir men’s blood” et disturbant mentes populi ad “a sudden flood of mutiny,” ut Wilhelmus Shakespearus scripsit.

Cum Quirites Americani ad rallias Republicanas audiunt nomen Baraci Husseini Obamae, clamant “Mortem!” “Amator terroris!” “Socialiste!” “Bomba Obamam!” “Obama est Arabus!” “Caput excidi!” tempus sit rabble-rouseribus desistere “Smear Talk Express,” ut Stephanus Colbertus dixit. Obama demonatus est tamquam Musulmanus-Manchurianus candidatus — civis “collo-cerviciliaris” ad ralliam Floridianam Palinae exhabet mascum Obamae ut Luciferis. . .

It goes on. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/opinion/12dowd.html?hp

1. Maureen Dowd writes in order to bring pleasure to Maureen Dowd
It's not so much the idea that there's something wrong with her as the fact that she found a way to receive financial compensation for pleasuring herself with herself.

3. Maureen Dowd has been a
blithering idiot for a while. Is there any wonder that her column is blithering idiocy?

4. A new low
Really.

This is embarrassing, even for a kiss-ass like Dowd.

11. Not much, but this is over the top even for her. Of course, the Times also has Bill Kristol.
And Maureen on her worst day (she has many) is far more rational than Bill Kristol on his best day (which he is still waiting for).

But she has just gone off the deep end in the last few years.

I miss the Maureen of years past.

13. She .is the worst kind of arrogant, blithering idiot. She's just showing how much she knows.
She was bad when I first heard of her in 2000.

She's MUCH worse now.

She is vile, and she could at least make up for her arrogance if she was witty and insightful. But she is neither, and her attempts, like this one, fall embarassingly flat.

14. Insecurity
Someone Who Matters must've noted (like millions before) that Dowd pens a high school gossip column. So, read and be dazzled -- she's serious, she's smart, she's deep.

And weird.

15. I've always attributed her completely crazy columns to writing "under the influence" -- sipping
while word-processing. The wonderful columns . . . stone cold sober. Or, vice versa!

16. would it be clever if I understood Latin?
perhaps many people over age 35 who went to prep schools could understand it? The rest of us are supposed to be what? Impressed? Embarrassed?

Anyway, Latin is the language of law.
