McCain doesn't "lose," but may have lost in the process

Ultimately, the winner of any argument is the one who achieves the desired result – in the case of tonight's Presidential debate – a vote cast for him by independants in November. With that in mind, we will have to wait to see who truly won and any analysis tonight is no more than Monday-morning quarter-backing. Nonetheless, some things can be gleamed from tonight’s performance, and such analysis may be very prophetic.

Initial analysis: The debate could easily be called a tie.

---snip---

Despite the supposed advantage, Obama was clear and forceful while also being intellectual and empathetic. McCain, used to working a friendly crowd, came across at times as condescending, especially in that one instance in which he referred to Obama as “that one.” Further, his sprinkling of jokes, including one about needing hair plugs, fell flat, not only with the audience, but with a group of undecided Ohio voters, whose physiological reactions were being measured on a monitor placed below the candidates on the CNN telecast.

Initial polls seem to indicate that those who support McCain will not be shaken, but at this stage in the process, it is less about energizing your base, and more about motivating the unmotivated.

---snip---

Even to the end, Obama kept fighting for votes. As McCain and his wife walked away, the debate portion of the evening over, Obama headed, not towards the exit, but towards a chief Petty Officer who had asked one of the questions. After chatting for a few moments, Obama continued to work the crowd, mingling with others in the audience.

Whether one considers that a political stunt or a sincere effort to connect with the voters, the fact remains – one made the effort and the other did not. Come November, Americans heading to the polls may remember small details such as that one more readily than each candidate’s position on health care or taxes.

If they do, McCain may have already lost.

1. I was wondering why the cameras were focused on Obama
after the debate, and not so much on mccain..

thought it might have been the 'gotcha media' ignoring mccain - but then that would it the "don't want to see-ya media"

second thought was perhaps mccain just forgot where he was and wandered away...
