But if you do a plain (free) WHOIS lookup for both rnc.org and barackosama.org, they both have the same IP address and the same SSL certificate

The site resolves to the same IP as all the other sites on the RNC. Also the site's SSL certificate is also registered to the RNC.

Now there is the possibility that someone that owns that domain is pointing it to the RNC server. The infamous owner of hotlesbiansheepaction.com does that with his domain.

It might not be registered to them. That's what we should check on. To see who this domain is registered to. It could be someone that has some creative scripts that take in every request and then forward it to the gop.com web site through curl calls in php or something like that and send what it gets back, after it converts a chunk of the gop.com urls to barak url. Notice a lot of the images still come from gop.com.

Now, part of me says that I wouldn't put it past some Republican from adding these sorts of redirects, but later on it could be exposed as a fraud and then they could throw up their hands and say that "dirty democrats" were trying to play trickses on them (as Gollum would say).

Now if there were some similar slamming Barak Osama references on the page in such a fashion (that was also on the gop.com web site, then I might think differently.

By the guy that owned hotlesbiansheepaction.com, one can point their domain to almost any DNS they want to. That could be the case here. The hotlesbiansheepaction guy used to point his to GOP.com one month, then georgebush.com the next.

The problem of course, is that the crappy obama domain is hidden behind a privacy service.

It was a long time ago that I researched this but I can't remember if when one points a site to a DNS, will it show in a WHOIS lookup, that the false domain shares the same SSL certificate as the real ones on the particular server?

Anybody know?

therefore it will be providing you with the Gop.com info since that is what the users would see. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

38. Ok, you're confused between a DNS server, and the host entry...

You can use any DNS server for you domain, the ip address that gets returned from there is what's important. All you have to do is put the IP address of the server you want to serve the domain in DNS. You don't have to actually have your own server to do this.

So whoever got the IP address ofthe GOP site, and put it in DNS as the server for that domain.
