Congratulations, Skinner and folks, the new system is working

The GP used to be like the static between radio frequencies: full of noise and largely incoherent.

Now DU is like any good Web 2.0 application. It allows a community of users to collaborate on the production and presentation of important information, while weeding out chaff.


I know that this stuff takes a lot of work, and it just seems to me it's really working.

Sorry, but I bet many well regarded (and recommended) posters will start seeing their efforts arent as appreciated as they once thought.

When they pour themselves into a half hour to write a piece that used to get 30 recommendations only to now see it rated as "average" (or worse) the quality of posts will begin to deteriorate.

In the old system, DU just counted people who liked a post. Now it balances those who like against those who dislike.

Consider the primaries. Let's say that the split was 60/40 Obama/Hillary. In the old system, more pro-Obama stuff would rise because Obama had more suport; but pro-Hillary stuff would also rise, but not by as much.

Under the current system, pro-Obama/anti-Hillary posters could dis-recommend pro-Hillary stuff, keeping it off the GP. The effect would be to make it seem that a slight majority was unanimity.

This new system enforces herd mentality rather than debate.
