16. Then I think you're be glad that you don't have to go thru what we blacks now do.
That is avoiding having your own hispanic "Thomas". Ugh!!!

But I would still like to see a hispanic "Thurman" thou. :)

20. I think most of us white folk do not view Mr. Thomas as black
we just see him as a f***ing asshole

26. Agree. The Thomas story is too bad
they just "threw" a token black in our face. I think that he is the only one in recent history that was not recommended by the American Bar Association.

I wish the whole Supreme Court were composed of Thurgood Marshalls..

2. There was serious talk that he would be appointed to the Supreme Court
and with nearly 2 more years left, there might still have been a chance, but for the fact that he was standing in front of reporters today trying to explain why the Department of Justice, under his watch, has been behaving like a pack of rabid beasts.

He is extraordinarily unpopular right now with Senator Leahy. It would be a nomination that would never go to the floor.

5. Wikipedia to the rescue
Shortly before the July 1, 2005 retirement of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sandra Day O'Connor, rumors started circulating that a memo had leaked from the White House stating that upon the retirement of either O'Connor or Chief Justice of the United States William Rehnquist, that Gonzales would be the first Bush nominee for a vacancy on the Court.

Quickly, conservative stalwarts such as National Review magazine and Focus on the Family, among other socially conservative groups, stated they would oppose a Gonzales nomination.

Much of their opposition to Gonzales was based on his perceived support of abortion rights;

(the irony!)

7. Gonzales might not even be in office by close of business this Friday.
I think his odds at a Supreme Court nod are less than zero.

8. Because if he has to resign from this position, there is no way he'll get confirmed
(even if Republicans somehow controlled the Senate) to the Supreme Court. Democrats would rightly filibuster him after this BS.

1. Impeachment and/or resignation because of US Atty mess.
2. Investigation by special prosecutor for perjury and obstruction of justice. Indictment inevitable.
3. Hauled to The Hague to answer charges of war crimes. Torture, etc.
4. Sentenced to life imprisonment, to be served at Spandau.

13. I'd welcome a Paul-on-the-road-to-Damascus moment for Attorney
General Gonzales.

Perhaps a blinding white light could engulf him and he would hear a divine voice telling him he's been a rat's patoot and must make it right, must renounce the people he's broken the law to please, must atone for the transgressions against liberty, including the recommendations of torture.

What Mr. Gonzales knows (I'm hunching) would put quite a few people in the Bush administration behind bars.

And that press appearance today was wretched and wobbly. This is a guy who knows his next several days are not going to be smooth ones.

14. The Republicans do not like him
and we certainly do not.

And if the Republicans want to preserve whatever they can for 2008, they will run away from him as far as possible.

15. I think you're right. Congressman Issa (R-CA) was on The News Hour
this evening and while he wasn't as vehement in his comments as Patrick Leahy, he indicated that Republicans are real edgy on this one.

Gonzales is a little monster. He may hold out for some time now, but the barrage of subpoenas he faces is going to overwhelm him .

I think he'll step down.

18. Yes. I'm hoping California Democrats can keep him from running
for the statehouse out there once Arnold leaves.

He and Dan Burton (R-IN) are arguably my least favorite Congress critters.

24. I keep thinking that one of these days, someone who's been scapegoated
in this misadministration will come forward; I mean, by the mathematics alone it seems not just likely, but guaranteed.

I keep expecting the tell-all book (I worked in the book business until last month, fwiw) but it never comes.

But off the top of my head the following disasters have occurred and people have been relieved of their duties, and still no insider tell-all:

Can't find al-Qaeda?
"Faulty" intelligence on Iraq?
Iraq itself?
Katrina?
Plamegate?
Torture?

I know the big publishing houses are owned by magacorporations now, many of whom see W as very friendly, but hell, if they smell a buck in it, they'd drop Jesus for the tell-all by Judas.

Something is just not right about all this. Perhaps Rove is a political Corleone?

25. A tell-all book would be great. Maybe with a Forward by John Dean.
Agree with you -- the sheer odds favor one of these books coming out. Maybe we wil still see something like that here in the next few months.

Rethuglicans up for re-election in 08 must be REAL pleased with this Gonzales story. As if they didn't have enough to worry about already.
