Palin: "Yes, I think I will see Jesus come back to earth in my lifetime"
...Bess was not the only man in the room who has had firsthand knowledge of how Palin’s evangelical views color her world view and therefore, potentially, her policy-making decisions. Phil Munger, our host and author of the Progressive Alaska blog is also a noted local musician and has had many dealings with Sarah Palin in the past.

says that Palin also helped push the evangelical drive to take over the Mat-Su Borough school board. “She wanted to get people who believed in creationism on the board,” said Munger, a music composer and teacher. “I bumped into her once after my band played at a graduation ceremony at the Assembly of God. I said, ‘Sarah, how can you believe in creationism — your father’s a science teacher.’ And she said, ‘We don’t have to agree on everything.’

“I pushed her on the earth’s creation, whether it was really less than 7,000 years old and whether dinosaurs and humans walked the earth at the same time. And she said yes, she’d seen images somewhere of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them.”

Munger also asked Palin if she truly believed in the End of Days, the doomsday scenario when the Messiah will return. “She looked in my eyes and said, ‘Yes, I think I will see Jesus come back to earth in my lifetime.’”

30. A logical (ha!) question about the Immaculate Lack of Contraception...
So follow me here: if jesus is, like, sort of/sort of not god, when the christian god boned Mary, did he shout "jesus is coming"?

...

Thanks, I'll be here all week! Try the fish - it's (allegedly) all you can eat!

11. So, let me get this straight...
She actually thinks that this charismatic guy who filled people with self-awareness, morals, purpose, and hope some 2000 years ago is going to suddenly re-appear on Earth to scoop up only those who are good little boys and girls, instead of the down-trodden and lost souls he so expertly ministered to lo those many centuries ago?

That's radical Christian extremism in action right there.

Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 09:15 PM by Zhade
...despite the lack of evidence? Remember, kids, Josephus' "proof" was a forgery!

However, you bring up a good point - why would this jesus dude bother with the people who were good only because they'd been ordered to by an authoritarian god they can't even be sure exists? Wouldn't he be way more interested in the good people who helped the downtrodden with no spiritual star system incentivizing them to do so?

43. I believe that Jesus existed. I have no reason not to considering
that Christianity is based on him. We've all seen cults of personality. However, I am a modern human who does not believe in mysticism as they surely did 2 millenia ago. Therefore, I have a hard time with the idea of a God and his rapture.

12. This reminds me of a Jewish banner I see when I drive to Brooklyn...
When I drive down along Eastern Parkway (which is heavily Hasidic), there is always this banner that proclaims "Messiah Is Here!!". The funny thing about it is that this banner is tacked on this rinky-dink little shed - so I chuckle to myself - "What, he's here in your shed? Everyone gather round!"

It's so pathetic that people with these Creationist beliefs have the nerve to try forcing those beliefs on the sane ones.

. . . that Jesus is gonna pop right up like a gigantic divinely stage-lit Jack-In-The-Box roughly 2,000 years after his last scheduled appearance, clearly implying by such action that everyone from Tiberius to Frank Sinatra, Galileo to Liberace, and Pliny the Elder to Einstein was just so much warm bathwater - not NEARLY important enough to rate a personal visit from Jeezus.

Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 09:09 AM by hatrack
Waiting for the perfect moment, right? Waiting for the True Prophecy to be promulgated, right?

Immaterial anyway, save for its potential impact on affairs in this world, for two simple reasons:

1. Palin, et. al. (Snake-Handlers R Us) are certifiable whack-jobs.

2. Jesus is still dead, and he ain't coming back. Palin, Parsley, Robertson and a whole bunch of others need to deal with it.

67. Sarah expects to live another 30 or 40 years
and so will another 8 billion people. If Jesus returns in the next ten years then he would also be returning, presumably, in my lifetime, yours, Al Gore's, Trent Green's, etc., etc., etc. Hence, it is clearly not 'all about Sarah'.

Palin may be a whack-job. However, her statement about Jesus' return does not make her so. Not in the eyes of "a whole bunch of others". Some of the irrational hate in this thread, though, does not reflect well on us.

What is more... Sarah would be shocked at what Jesus actually preached.. and if he went for his original views, he'd sound more like oh Rabbi Akivah than any of the preachers good sarah is thinking off

45. Apart from all the good humor. . .
Friends this is very troubling if true. Remember Watts, the interior secretary under Reagan, who was selling off government lands for minerals and timber at an alarming rate? When asked about his actions, he responded flippantly, "Don't you know Jesus is coming?" This particular theological view can be cataclysmic for someone with authority over our weaponry and military. If anything can be named gloom and doom, this would be the one. Be very afraid. . . It is very likely in her world view armageddon leads to heaven on earth with God's chosen. It is not a stretch given the videos postings from her church that she may see herself as the agent of divine intervention.

is that if she really is a fundamentalist, and not just pandering, then she may very well believe the "end is near". Now, what happens when McLame punces his ticket (highly likely given his age, medical history, general disposition), and Palin assumes the throne, er, presidency? Does even the stupidest secular repug want someone with their finger on the button who may be hearing "the voice of God" telling them that Armegeddon is upon us, and it's her duty to light it off? 61. What makes this so frightening
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 08:45 AM by Spritz57
What makes this so frightening for me is the uniqueness of the situation. Reagan gave lip-service to the right. The RNC used fliers in the South, as many of you will remember, touting him as "God's Candidate." Toward the end of the Reagan Administration and thereafter the right knew Reagan played them as has been documented in various interviews and articles but they grew up. They matured and fine tuned their approaches. Bush 1 and Bush 2 also used the religious right for political gains. It was only Bush 2 who marginally granted them some greater access and threw them some bones (Church base initiatives, etc.). All three Presidents were not of that religious ilk, they were in the mainstream of American denominations (perhaps with the exception of Reagan who did not attend church but did seek guidance from an astrologist--talk about an under reported story!). Their Vice Presidents were also not as theologically conservative though they portrayed themselves as such. With a 72 year old candidate who is a cancer survivor coupled with an un-vetted extremely theologically conservative activist who is way out of the mainstream, I am greatly concerned (as stated above).

Just a word of advice to my fellow Democrats (for what its worth), let's be careful with the religious banter. There are fundamentalists and those others who believe in the rapture (pre-tribulation, tribulation, and post tribulation), and (dare I say) conservatives who would find Ms. Palin's views extreme. In motorcycle speak, she is a 1%er, that is, for those who are not "in the wind", an extreme case--in other words she would scare a Southern Baptist, believe it or not! Perhaps, exposing her views through research with commentary from those who know this subject well, the information might disillusion many within their ranks. We cannot afford to alienate those who might be reached if we smugly castigate their views--we leave them little choice if we appear condescending toward their beliefs. As I've posted before, just my 2 cents. . . what do you think?

73. Hey, it's just not logical to believe that all this intricacy in life is random
I believe in BOTH a Higher Intelligence (Creator), as well as science! Since when do the two have to be mutually exclusive? I don't believe in teaching religious doctrine/dogma in public schools because it would infringe on particular beliefs, but I just want to express my confusion that so many progressive seem to scoff at even the idea of something higher than themselves.

74. She'd seen "images somewhere" of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them?
And where might that "somewhere" be? The series of tubes known as the Internets? 'Cause we all know that each and every image posted on the tubes is genuine; none are ever, ever altered by means of digital editing tools such as Photoshop. That would be immoral.

80. Does anyone remember the SNL Christmas cartoon where Jesus came back and zapped Jerry Falwell
(and other T.V.-type preachers) but he loved the Charlie Brown Christmas special -- it showed the part where Linus is talking. I can't remember what season that was but it was clever.
