re the reputation of "hockey moms"
Submitted by Colleen Clark on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 7:39pm.

The Boston Globe today (Sept 10) has an op-ed by a local writer, Marianne Leone.
It's entitled "Welcome to the special needs club"

Here's how it starts out,
"'Trample the weak; hurdle the dead.' Hockey moms in Plymouth can by T-shirts with this
motto for their kids at M&M's Sporting Goods in the center of 'America's Home Town.'
(reference to Plymouth being the town with the famous rock where the Pilgrims supposedly
landed) How will Sarah Palin, self-described hockey mom, reconcile this brutal ethos
with her promise to 'be an advocate for parents of children with special needs,' now
that she's a member of that club too?"

At the end of the column, "I walked into M&M's Sporting Goods and complained to the
manager about the T-shirt and its vicious message. She shrugged and told me, 'we sell a
lot of 'em.'"

1. That's just middle aged suburban women who are WAYYY too
wrapped up in their kids trying to act all cute and tough and speshul. The terms "hockey mom", "soccer mom", etc. just make me ill. Am I the only mother out there who really isn't all that into my kids' activities? I don't refer to myself as a "guitar mom" or a "video game" mom. Fucking stupid shit, and I'm fucking tired of hearing about it.

3. yeah, I think kid's sports should be watched by kids not adults

while in grades 1 to 12.

the parents seem to even watch practice sessions.

when I was in school parents seldom watched and for my kids too. things started to change after that.

is it the baby boomers that started it?

4. Maybe it is a generational thing--my parents are older than Boomers, and
they dropped me off and picked me up at my softball games and asked me who won, and that was it--I didn't expect them to sit through my boring-ass games. They didn't do my homework with me, they didn't entertain me, they didn't indulge my every whim, they didn't shuttle me to endless expensive hobbies and activities, and they sure as HELL didn't identify themselves through their kids. Guess they just didn't love me enough, compared to parents of today...

2. Whaat?
This is just a leetle bit reaching, methinks.

Being a hockey mom who actually plays hockey, I'm somehow able to "reconcile" this with having compassion for others. Amazing!
