Literally BLUE in a freakin Red State!!!!
I just moved from Michigan to Nebraska. The mayor of Detroit (low life criminal) just resigned and will be facing jail soon. Before I left, there were a lot of race baiters linking his name with Obama's. I'm worried about Michigan but I think we will win it because a lot of hard work is being done by volunteers to get the information correct when it comes to Obama.

Long story short we moved to small town Nebraska at the end of June. Okay, so I'm at my son's football game the other nite and a lady just making conversation asks me what I thought about Palin's speech and I say...."she said nothing, she read a divisive and nasty speech and said nothing about her qualifications to be VP." This lady stared at me like I was a nut and said "you would vote for someone that is a black and a muslim?". I wanted to freaking wring her neck. I tried to calmly state that he is not a muslim, I'm not racist.....and before I could finish she stormed away. I've been really bummed. Just needed to share. I'm going to find out where the local democrats are so I can have some friends and get some work done to get Obama/Biden in the white house!

1. "you would vote for someone that is a black and a muslim?"
Sure...why not?

I mean, unless you are an religiously intolerant racist.

3. I think its time to stop being polite to asshats like that
I have run across a number of them myself (here in Michigan). They flat out believe that he is Muslim because of his name. I had one who after I beat down her rhetoric (politely) started telling racist jokes.

Its time to tell these people that they are in fact ignorant assholes. They feel as though they can say these things because they believe they will not be countered in public. They are the ignorant backwater idiots. Its time they were reminded.

10. You konw, I think you're right. I was listening to Michael Moore on
Larry King tonight, and Michael had several great points. First he said "Dems tend to be...well...nice. TOO NICE!" I think that's true, and maybe we have to change that!

Second, Larry asked him what he says to people who say they would never vote for a Dem, or that they don't want to be a Dem! Michael said this: "You don't have to be a Dem, and you don't even have to LIKE the candidates, but if you were working on your car and the wrench you were using wasn't working, you should get a different wrench. If THAT wrench doesn't work, then you get another one! In otherwords, what's been tried for the last 8 years hasn't worked, so try a different party. If you don't like what Obama and Biden do, they in four years you throw them out and get two different people, You don't just keep trying the wrench that doesn't work!" I love the analagy! I think maybe we should start using THAT logic with the people who think they either hate Dems or just couldn't EVER think of themselves being anything but a Pub.

4. Deja Vu
I've heard the exact same thing many times here. (MS)
And they always storm off because they have to go wedge their heads even further up their asses.

I found some sane people on barackobama.com. I created a profile for myself, and you can do a search within
your area of events and members....and I actually found quite a few....shocking!!

Try it, you'll never find them otherwise because, like me, they've learned not to talk to anyone unless you have to.

5. Unfortunately the lady you met is like many in red country.
"This lady stared at me like I was a nut and said "you would vote for someone that is a black and a muslim?".

She must have been in a public place when she said that, otherwise I think she would have dropped the N-bomb. I hear it sometimes here in Missouri, racist freepers saying things like "Obama should hang from a tree." etc.

sometimes growing up there I used to thing I was the only white guy who didn't admire the Klan. Obama's got tough work ahead of him if he wants to make a show of it in any Southern states.

16. I am from Georgia and I was hoping against hope that he
would carry us but now I don't think there is a chance. Atlanta would and maybe some other counties but the rest are red and they are giddy over Sarah. :puke: :puke:

I am seeing lots of McCain yard signs already. I don't think he is going to carry the south, which is why we have GOT to have Ohio. My best friend from high school lives there and she is telling me that she thinks McCain has a good chance there which scares me. We need Florida too!

On the bright side at Zaxby's the other day I saw a lovely black woman with a BEAUTIFUL TEE SHIRT - It was Martin "I have a dream" on the left and Obama "Yes we can!" on the right. I struck up a conversation with her and she said one of her family members got it. It was simply beautiful!

8. Completely feel you, I live it TN.
I work with "the public", you cannot imagine the conversations I have overheard and been involved in. I have made enemies. My husband refuses to let me put a Obama sticker on my car out of fear for my safety or some extra special attention from police. Seriously, and he is as blue, bleeding heart as I am. He becomes visibly upset every time I try to argue with him about it. Sometimes this country scares the shit out of me.

24. I lived in Tn recently and now a very Red area of GA.
I know exactly what you mean. I do have a couple of bumper stickers-God Bless the World and Dept of Peace. I had a person in a monster truck pass me holding up a sign saying "You are an idiot," and have been given the bird at stop lights. I am constantly around people who tell me their ancestors didn't swing on trees.

What part of TN?

I live as a complete hermit with no friends other than on DU.

Even the Democrats here are red. I got discouraged trying to work inside the party here and won't even volunteer this time around.

There is just no hope for an Obama win here.

12. Living in a red state isn't all that bad, if
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 03:37 AM by Captiosus
you're fortunate enough to live in a blue city.

I live in the very blue city of Newport News, VA. I'm surrounded by other blue cities. But if I drive a mere 30 minutes to the southwest, I'm in deep red where the political astuteness drops to negative numbers. It's not that they're bad folks, just not open to change. They've had it drilled into their head that the "republican party" is THEIR party - the party that "cares" about the blue collar workers, the beer-drinking-football-watching "every man party". It's so repeated in their culture that they never question it, even when someone presents facts because clearly someone speaking about facts is exactly the kind of outsider they've been warned to be wary of.

My paternal grandmother lived in a deep red small town here and she looked at anyone with a (D) or (I) behind their name as the absolute anti-Christ. I liken it to a Phobic Anxiety Disorder: An irrational fear so embedded in their collective minds that they aren't aware they're doing it and couldn't explain it even if they realized they were.

14. You Can't Fight Stupid
I'm not as concerned about Michigan...especially with Biden on the ticket. The unions will be out for him strong and with the Kilpatrick circus out of the way, the focus will be on a large turnout in Detroit.

For many years I was a lone wolf of blue in a sea of red-necks. Now I'm in an area that is totally blue. The corruption of the state GOOP has destroyed it...Repugnicans now try to mask their identities.

The sad and unspoken truth is there are a lot of racists in this country. Some are discreet about it, others wear it on their sleeves. The muslim thing is the "moral justification" that gives cover for saying she wouldn't vote for him because he's black. It's believing the lie...that I'm sure is re-inforced by others.

I'll bet there are other pockets of blue where you are...just takes a little time to find it. But Nebraska & Kansas have long been under the GOOP spell and the airwaves are dominated by hate radio. Change will take time, but change does come when people want to make it work.

Cheers...

18. Everywhere is civilized compared to AL
There are no blue areas at all here, just scattered individuals, and most of them are from somewhere else. I don't know what happened to me...I was born here, spent most of my life here and have always considered myself a liberal Democrat. I've voted in every presidential election since 1980 on the losing side, as far as statewide results are concerned. And I guess I'll do it again this time, because I figure that Obama will be very lucky to pull in 35% of the vote here. Oh, well...

22. She was looking for validation of her position and you failed her. Prick : )
A few more incidents like that and she'll either reevaluate her beliefs or learn to keep her mouth shut in "polite" society. Personally, I wouldn't have bothered trying to educate the ignorant racist - I'd have made a scene. Not a huge scene, but enough to scare her into thinking she was THIS CLOSE >< to being outed in public. Actually, that's probably why she ran away.

Thankfully, many of these same people have children savvy enough to wonder what all the fuss is about. It's the GD liberal media, y'know?

It's either re-education or marginalization with that crowd.

23. Here's my strategy
I live in a very red part of a mostly red state. Among people you work with or live with (co-workers and neighbors) it's best to remain silent about your politics if you value your privacy and peace of mind like I do. These folks can make your life hell since you must interact with them daily. True story: when Kerry lost in 2004, my co-workers threw an office party and taunted me the entire day for being a Kerry supporter. At lunch break I went into a rest room in another building and cried (for Kerry, for the country, and for myself for having to work with cruel assholes) then returned to the party serene and cheerful. Today I work in another part of the same state and the folks I live and work with are as radical wingnut as you please, but they think I'm an 'independent' because I remain noncommittal on all sensitive subjects. Little do they know!

26. You need to hit these self rightous home townies where it hurts!
You MUST act shocked, and tell them, "I thought this place supported family values. Obviously you are a bigot and a racists, and THOSE are NOT any values I want MY kids to learn."

It wont do much for the most of the men, but it makes the women, especially the older ones, think.
