Mandatory evacuations issued for Florida Keys.
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 04:29 PM by Dr.Phool
I just saw it on the Weather Channel, nobody has any links yet, otherwise it would be posted in LBN.

Mandatory visitor evacuations to start Saturday for Florida Keys.

I guess we're going to get a visit from Ike.Forecasts have the storm moving through the Florida Straits and curving up into the gulf.

Right now the cone looks like the west coast of Florida.

On edit: It was just visitors on Sat at 9:00 am.

Added Everybody mandatory evacuation on Sunday 9:00am.

8. I know this sounds cynical and a little sick, but....
If I weren't an atheist, I might say that god is trying to put those poor people in Haiti out of their misery. They've been through too much the last couple of weeks already.

5. Just damn. They have Ike tracking into the Gulf as a Cat 4 with the upper
Gulf states as a very possible destination.

Lots of time yet for the track to change however.

:(

And, later, I see Florida's problem...

The Lower Bahamas, I guess, know how to cope?

9. The fact is there is no such thing as a Mandatory Evacuation
The police can show up and tell you it's a mandatory evacuation. They can tell you that you have to leave, but no one can MAKE you leave.

Lot's of people won't due to delays in being allowed to return, or bad shelter conditions.

11. You're right.
And a lot of people won't leave because shelters won't allow pets.

17. You are right, of course.
But being told it's a Mandatory Evacuation will persuade some number of people to leave who might otherwise stay. I've never been to the Florida Keys, but aren't they basically at sea level? Doesn't that make them particularly vulnerable to wind and rain damage? It's a tough decision for those who have pets, who don't have friends or relatives in a safe zone willing and able to take them and their pets in. I have three cats of my own and I can't imagine what I'd do if faced with such a decision.
