A dose of economic reality creeps into Freeperville?
....there's the usual collection of knuckle-draggers, but also some surprisingly pragmatic posts in this thread about the unemployment numbers.

The Press loves getting in teh word ‘Recession’ into any story on the economy. Only Doom, Gloom and the Death of Hope at the hands of rich white men will do for their stories.

If any political entity effects the economy, it’s the Legislature. People understand this. That’s why the approval rating of Congress is in the single digits.

Students are returning to school. Wouldn’t that play a roll in this? I’m dumb when it comes to this stuff, so please excuse if it’s a stupid question. Somebody told me a long time ago, that the only stupid question, was the one you didn’t ask.

“Only Doom, Gloom and the Death of Hope at the hands of rich white men will do for their stories.”

Hard to spin a lot of the recent news in a positive light.

The US Auto industry is in the tank. That alone has to count for a lot of job loss. Ford’s market cap has almost dipped lower than Harley.

There is an unwinding happening here. Housing and other asset declines, deflated dollars and reduced purchasing power, lack of affordable energy and yes, there will be pain while we work this out. Bubbles create a huge mess when they pop and we saw it in 2000-2003 and we are seeing it now.

McCain/Palin should hammer the point that cheap and plentiful energy fuels our economy and that Obama is happy about the high energy costs and the resultant brakes that puts on the US economy.
Bingo - Along with the fact that the DEM Congress increased the minimum wage - Econ 101, tax something and you will get less of it for a period of time - The DEM congress put a tax on labor and we have less of it -

This issue is just sitting there for the GOP to go on the attack on - Show 06, when DEMs took control of Congress and today - The GOP is pathetic when it comes to going on the offensive on issues - Energy costs and labor costs are the two main factors for higher unemployment right now....

Yup...and guess what...the incumbents are running and ducking hard and fast as they screwed the economy from a 2-year .."Do NOTHING" Congress.
The Libs want socialism and will kill everyone that gets in their way.

Seems as though McLame and Zero and Mr. Gaffe aren't being asked any tough questions relating to this subject specifically about domestic energy improvements, trade deficits, unbalanced budgets, the sub-prime orgy, illegal immigration, and the open US southern border.

And what I mean is....why they did nothing to help any of the above from raping the US consumer??

Minimum wage was effective July 24th. We warned them. You have to balance a payroll and are entitled to make an investment.
Can someone tell me why kids, still in school and supported by their parents need to "make a living"?

Gee, didn’t President Bush on 30 June just sign another extension of unemployment benefits? Might this not have inspired more people to sign up as unemployed.

D’oh.

It takes energy to run a business, to get people to work and to the store. Carter found that out when unemployment went over 10 percent, back in the days of his double digit economy, double digit inflation rates, double digit interest rates and double digit unemployment. If the Dems and greens keep blocking energy progress, we’ll get another Carter economy and worse.

many unemployed lifeguards, camp counselors and ice cream sellers in my town at the moment.

Not to mention the loss of jobs in the MSM.

The unemployment numbers are "seasonally adjusted" to take into account summer employment.

Don’t forget the MSM is having to shed jobs! They chose the wrong side to put their money on — liberal Democrats and now Obama.

Our unemployment rate in Oklahoma is low, very low compared to a lot of places. Our rate in July was 4.5% lower then any state surrounding Oklahoma. Why? Oil and gas and aviation make Oklahoma pretty recession proof.

We have become the location of a host of military aerospace companies. You want a job in aerospace, come to Oklahoma — they are looking for aerospace, electrical, and mechanical engineers. Have a list of all aerospace companies doing business in Oklahoma and it is page after page.

The rate in my County, Cleveland, is 3.4% and in Oklahoma County north of us 4.3%. There are help wanted signs everywhere I drive in this area. This year OU students can pick and choose where they want to work.

The numbers are seasonally adjusted.

There really is no good way to spin this. It's bad, very bad, and will overshadow anything good that came out of St. Paul this week. This will get flogged enthusiastically by the Democrats and the press, and blamed on Bush. It doesn't matter whether it's adjusted later, it doesn't matter what any other fundamentals are, this is very bad news for the McCain candidacy...

Press Release from the Labor Department

"The unemployment rate rose from 5.7 to 6.1 percent in August, and non-farm payroll employment continued to trend down (-84,000), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. In August, employment fell in manufacturing and employment services, while mining and health care continued to add jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 7 cents, or 0.4 percent, over the month."

1. Wonder what they thought when McCain
started talking about paying benefits to match people's old wages as they trained in new jobs. The looks on people's faces in the RNC crowd were priceless.

3. Minimum wage and unemployment...rrrrigghttt.
Geez, can they possibly parade out any more of the discredited fantasies with a straight face? To wit, when you look at the statistics, a rise in the mininum wage is followed either by a boost to the economy, or no change. The only exception (and again, this is just relying on my memory) was one time in the 70s (as we were suffering from the economic blow-back from the VN war). Yes, they consider paying people a decent wage a 'tax.' Assholes.

Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 11:29 AM by Lorien
Colonel Sanders got into office and they are blaming Planet Smoothie for the huge jump in the price of poultry  . And the jump in the minimum wage driving down the economy? Bzzzzt! Wrong; historically that has NEVER been the case. Give people more money and they spend more. Simple economics. If THEY didn't think that this worked they would not have backed the stimulus package.

9. "blamed on Bush"?
There really is no good way to spin this. It's bad, very bad, and will overshadow anything good that came out of St. Paul this week. This will get flogged enthusiastically by the Democrats and the press, and blamed on Bush.

Well, of course he will be blamed. He supposedly has been running the country for the past eight years, right? This after someone else was lambasting Carter for the economy during his term... oh, it was okay to jump all over Carter, but little Georgie? Blameless, naturally. The willful lack of accountability toward those responsible for driving the country into the ditch makes my head hurt.

At least they've noticed the economy sucks and is only going to get worse. That is progress of a sort.

10. The Senate Republicand filibuster at a record-smashing pace
THAT is why Congress' approval is so low. They broke the 24-month filibuster record in 11 months! They've been blocking time and time again legislation that passed the House and that a majority of Senators would vote for.

Senate Republicans are the reason Congress' approval ratings are low (which are never, ever high to begin with anyway). People are blaming the Senate as a whole because of the the obstructionist Republicans filibuster.
