Obama|Biden in Dublin
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 01:53 AM by bigtree

DUBLIN, Ohio--Barack Obama and Joe Biden took their message to the nation's test-market Saturday evening, hosting a boisterous outdoor rally outside Columbus, Ohio.

With the sun sitting over a football field at Dublin-Coffman High School, Obama and his running mate took turns bashing opponent John McCain, largely on pocketbook issues. Obama, particularly, pointed to President George W. Bush's comments Saturday that the economy was making progress, even as a report said personal income in July saw its largest drop since 2005.

Estimates had the crowd at the sprawling suburban high school as high as 19,000. Local campaign officials said it was larger than expected, especially given that this Saturday was the highest of holy days in Central Ohio: the day of home football game for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Biden took some fresh foreign policy swipes at McCain, saying that Obama had been proven right in his positions on adding troops in Afghanistan, setting a timetable for the removal of forces in Iraq and opening a diplomatic dialogue with Iran. "Barack Obama was right. John McCain was wrong."

Biden was cheered loudly when he referred to his native Scranton, Pa., perhaps suggesting that his roots may play well in this state as well. As for the newly announced vice presidential nominee on the Republican side, Sarah Palin was not mentioned by name. Obama joked, however, that in the 19 months of the campaign, he has visited every state in the country "except Alaska." The crowd hooted. "I might have to get up there," Obama said.

Barack Obama aimed straight for the heart Saturday night.

O-H...I-O

O-H...I-O

O-H...I-O

Obama started the chant and the 20,000 people packed into a suburban high school football stadium -- many still dressed in their red and white Ohio State football jersey from the 43-0 victory over Youngstown State earlier in the day -- responded in kind.

As the sun slowly set, Obama asked the crowd to help him enlist not just Democrats but also Republicans and independents in the crusade to change America.

"If you believe me, I promise you that we will not just win Ohio, we will win this election, you and I and Joe Biden, we will change this country and we will change the world," Obama said.

He cast Republican John McCain as out of touch for saying the economy was making progress and as President Bush's partner. They have a philosophy that expects you to pull yourselves up by your bootstraps "even if you don't have boots," Obama said.

Barack Obama debuted a new line before a crowd of 18,000 in Dublin, Ohio, borrowing a phrase from his opponent John McCain’s own campaign criticisms of his energy proposals.

"John McCain says the problem is Washington hasn't done anything in 30 years, what he doesn’t say is he's been there 26," Obama said today. "And he said no to higher fuel efficiency standards on cars. He said no to making sure that we are investing in renewable fuels. He has been Dr. No when it comes to energy."

Yes, you’ve heard that nickname before: "Dr No" is one that the McCain campaign originally coined for Obama, on exactly the same issue, energy policy.

Obama predicted Republicans will go negative in their fall campaign, saying of himself: “He’s got a funny name. He hasn’t been in Washington long enough.

“If you don’t have ideas to run on, you run on old tactics.”

The American people are anxious, Obama said during his visit to Dublin Coffman High School in this Columbus suburb. “Over the last eight years, this country has gone tragically off course. … You are working harder and harder just to get by. … If you get sick you may end up getting bankrupt.”

“We had a pretty good week this week,” Obama said of his nomination in Denver. “I’ve learned that America is big and it is beautiful. … Change is possible.”

6. Great Post and Pics - - Thanks!

What a crowd!! Wow! Barack and Joe look great together, too. Joe seems to be having the time of his life. It's fantastic.

And, I can't help myself - - this event was planned, what, about a week ago? And they got close to 20,000 people . . . while the McClown/Palin' "rally" at the (ahem) Nutter Center drew 10,000, had thousands of empty seats, and was planned for at least two weeks? Um. I'm starting to feel pretty good about Ohio.

I wonder if Barack and Joe should do a bus tour of Virginia and North Carolina.

9. Great pictures bigtree! If you knew what a big deal OSU football was to the area, &
knowing it is a holiday weekend with many activities going on, plus 90 degree plus heat, I have to say the numbers are very impressive. I was asked to volunteer for the rally but had scheduled company coming over. It was hard to miss.

13. Everything I've heard Obama say I, for the most part agree with
or at least can understand the whys but the thing I really like about the man is his humility, the way it comes through when giving a speech and someone yells something that makes him pause and smile. That smile and little chuckle he has tells me all I need to know about the man. Oh and its obvious what kind of a man he is by watching him with his family. What a class act They are and what a soothing feeling it gives me after these last 7 plus years of hell we've been in and aren't out of yet.

Go Obama forth and slay that dragon, you know the one with the nazi symbols new moniker, GOP

16. received this from a friend of mine
We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know
about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudderbto think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today.
—Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska.
—Christine B., Denali Park, AK

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be.
—Karen L., Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.
—Sherry C.,Anchorage, AK

She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary.
—Marina L., Juneau, AK

I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting "A Woman" in that position
—Jennifer M.,Anchorage, AK
