Ikes Granddaughter Backs Obama
I have decided I can no longer be a registered Republican. For the first time in my life I announced my support for a Democratic candidate for the presidency, in February of this year. This was not an endorsement of the Democratic platform, nor was it a slap in the face to the Republican Party. It was an expression of support specifically for Senator Barack Obama. I had always intended to go back to party ranks after the election and work with my many dedicated friends and colleagues to help reshape the GOP, especially in the foreign-policy arena. But I now know I will be more effective focusing on our national and international problems than I will be in trying to reinvigorate a political organization that has already consumed nearly all of its moderate “seed corn.” And now, as the party threatens to trivialize what promised to be a serious debate on our future direction, it will alienate many young people who might have come into party ranks.

My decision came at the end of last week when it was demonstrated to the nation that McCain and this Bush White House have learned little in the last five years. They mishandled what became a crisis in the Caucusus, and this has undermined U.S. national security. At the same time, the McCain camp appears to be comfortable with running an unworthy Karl Rove–style political campaign. Will the McCain operation, and its sponsors, do anything to win? 6. Susan Eisenhower, she's there in Denver.
Brokaw interviewed her today. I wonder if she will speak from the podium? She would be a nice contrast to that lunatic Zell Miller or asskissin Joe LIEberman. The reasons for her change of party are thoughtful and heartfelt.

4. Ike himself wouldn't recognise the Republican Party as it exists today.
He'd be considered a moderate liberal now.

8. She formally left the Republican party recently
saying that while she still holds conservative beliefs, that Repub party has lost its moorings
I don't think she become a registered Dem, most likely registered independent.

9. K&R I'd vote Republican if...
IF Ike was a presidential candidate or if the NeoCONS that call themselves Republicans shared his fiscal values.

10.  Ickes Son backed Kerry
Ike's son isn't the only presidential offspring to stay off the GOP bandwagon this year - one in which the father and son theme is never entirely absent, with President George W. Bush himself being the son of former president George H. W. Bush.

The Democrats scored a coup last summer when Ron Reagan, the late president's youngest son, addressed the Democratic convention on behalf of stem cell research. Reagan, 46, lambasted President Bush in interviews he gave around the same time - accusing the Bush administration of lying its way into the Iraq war and vowing he'd support anyone who could beat President Bush.

Eisenhower, 82, a former U.S. ambassador to Belgium and an author, used an opinion column published Tuesday in The Union Leader of Manchester, N.H. to express his own views on Campaign 2004.

Eisenhower explains that after 50 years as a Republican, he has lost confidence in the GOP and has switched his party affiliation to Independent.

"There are times when we must break with the past, and I believe this is one of them," Eisenhower wrote, going on to criticize President Bush and the GOP for federal budget deficits, for "unilaterally" invading Iraq and for infringing on personal liberties.

The Bush campaign had no immediate comment.
