Jon Stewart Schools The Media.......Again
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/25/jon-stewart-lectures-repo_n_121247.html

As Comedy Central's "Daily Show" descends on Denver for four days of coverage, Jon Stewart took after the "established" media for getting too cozy with candidates and regurgitating campaign spin when it comes to political coverage.

In a breakfast with reporters, Stewart directed most of his ire at the 24-hour cable news networks, which he called "gerbil wheels," and said the media at-large had "abdicated" to what he called the "slow-witted beast."

He said the never-ending television news cycle creates a "false sense of urgency" and forces reporters to "follow the veins that have been mined," instead of pursuing serious and in-depth reporting.

At Comedy Central's Indecision2008 blog, Dennis DiClaudio called the breakfast "the second most fascinating, most I-can't-believe-I'm experiencing-this, thing I have ever witnessed in my admittedly very unfascinating and inexperienced life."

But it wasn't the first time Stewart called the media to task. The lecture was reminiscent of his famous 2004 "Crossfire" appearance, in which he asked the hosts to "stop hurting America":

1. Stewart and Colbert have done much for this country
As in Ancient Greece sometimes satire is one of the only patches on the dam.

it's disturbing that the only one seeing that the Emperor (media) has no clothes is a comedian.... thank god for Stewart.

8. Stewart Represents Something Astonishly Rare In the Media Right Now
A figure on the talent end who has absolute say over what comes out of their own mouth.

He is absolutely right, but can you imagine the guts it take to tell them to their faces? Reminds me of Colbert at the Correspondent's dinner - I LOVE those two!

12. crossfire was the best debate show on MSM at that time
it did showcase right wing hacks but Carville is a fighter and love him very much and I like Begala as well. Jon Stewart made Tucker Carlson look like the jackass he is and I agree MSM can do much better for debate shows but Hannity and Colmes sucks for the most point for the left wing view.

However for the most part I agree with Stewart's views but Crossfire wasn't a bad show as I watched it everyday and now we are left with barely anything that showcases the left wing view and news tv show.

13. Crossfire was mind-numbing garbage...
And there was nothing at all "left wing" about any of it. You can't possibly be referring to Carville and Begala as "left wing."

Edited on Tue Aug-26-08 06:23 PM by JonLP24

I haven't heard of him in a few years as from 06-07 I didn't pay hardly any attention to daily events in politics.

I loved him because he was one of the toughest dem fighters on the in the MSM at the time ('05) and really, really enjoyed the book 'The Handbook For Fighting Back' in fact I would recommend everyone read it. There is probaly something you guys know that I don't know  I know you DUers are on top of everything.

19. Carville is a Clinton supporter, but not a democrat.
Sure, he can seem like a democrat, because the Clintons are democrats, but he tries to sabotage other democrats whenever they are opposed to the Clintons. He sabotaged Kerry in 2004 (passed Kerry strategy documents to the RNC through his republican and despicable wife Mary Matalin) so Hillary could run in 2008, and he's trying to sabotage Obama right now.

The PUMA thing: When Hillary didn't win the nomination, a bunch of pissed off old ladies got upset and said they aren't voting for Obama, no way no how, and they called themselves PUMA's, for "Party Unity My Ass". They're still around and they're in Denver right now.

So while Carville is on CNN, supposedly representing the Democratic Party, he's sending a message that very loudly and clearly says "Fuck Obama" to anybody paying attention.

So fuck James Carville. He's supposed to be a democrat, claims to be a democrat, but his only loyalty is to the Clintons. Fuck him. I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

21. I gotcha
I can see why many of believe that he was wearing those shoes to send a message considering that PUMA stands for that(which I didn't know). The only reason why I wont call it a coincidence is because he is wearing a full suit and tie on national TV wearing PUMA's, the appropriate shoes for what he is wearing is plain, dress black(brown, white) shoes and he is wearing sneakers. However, if he was wearing regular civilian attire then I can accept that it MIGHT be a coincidence.

23. That's my take on it too.
I'd laugh it off if he was wearing those with jeans and a T shirt at burger king. But with slacks and a jacket & tie at the convention? Please!

18. Which is probably why you remain so uninformed.
Because of the fact you form your thinking and opinions from nothing less than cheaply produced theater like Crossfire.

You are not going to find the Truth in your TV.

Edited on Tue Aug-26-08 07:39 PM by JonLP24
You have no idea what I know. How do you know I form my ideas and opinions from Crossfire? How do you know I'm so uniformed. I admit I can't keep track of everything as I don't have super powers but most of my information and what I know comes from DU. Don't be fooled by my post count, I've been here at DU since 2004 under another username. I joined the Army 10/20/2005 and was recently discharged 06/27/08 so I haven't had much time to browse or post during that period of time I really hope you understand why I couldn't keep up with every information but to believe I form my opinions on Crossfire is foolish, we've had crossfire watch threads here at DU that I posted in because why this isn't saying much at all trust me Crossfire was one of the best shows that had a left wing point of view. If you remember there was barely any left wing views on the MSM barely at all, and while Crossfire gets cancelled the likes of debate shows such as Hannity and Colmes continues on which has a very weak left wing point of view.

Ughh, I don't even know why I'm responding to such foolish and false accusations by someone who doesn't even know me at all. :argh:

on edit: I can't believe you used the word fact as if I actually stated I form my opinions and ideas from Crossfire.

I just looked at the post you replied to. The last thing I remember Begala saying was in reference to Paris/Obama ad (few weeks ago) he pretty much said it was foolish for McCain to air an aid with Obama in front of thousands of people then asking the question is he ready to lead?

Do you agree or disagree to Begala's statement? I agree with it, how does that make me uninformed?

Another :argh:

24. I didn't ask whether you agreed with them.
I asked if you considered them to be "left wing."

Maybe I'm picking nits here, but "left wing" is not synonymous with "left of center."

25. that is what I meant
I wasn't trying to refer to him as a progressive. Just meant he was a democrat even if he is moderate. I'm not a political compass so I can't completely tell but I catch myself generally agreeing with what he says.

30. He doesn't have the time
But, he already knows anyway. Jon Stewart is on "my list". We have a list of top 10 people that we would agree to leave each other for. It's a joke, it kind of goes like this, "If Johnny Depp were to show up at the door to sweep me off my feet, I'm gone, sorry honey." And he says, "Well, I'm sure that Meg Ryan will be right behind him, waiting for me. So go right ahead!"

Just one of those weird games that married people play. ;)
