Russia says Georgian troops should go back to Iraq

The Associated Press

Published: August 19, 2008

MOSCOW: A top Russian general says the terms of the cease-fire with Georgia mean that Georgian soldiers who had been serving in Iraq should be sent back there.

After heavy fighting broke out between Georgia and Russia this month, Georgia urgently called home the approximately 2,000 soldiers that were serving as part of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.

A cease-fire in the Georgia-Russia fighting calls for both sides' soldiers to return to the positions they held before the conflict.

Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of the Russian general staff, told reporters Tuesday that includes the soldiers "transferred from Iraq to Georgia."
