John McCain Gets Testy With Vet Over GI Bill
This meeting is from July, but the video is new on Youtube and I think it might help thouse of us talking to Freeps who think McCain is pro vet.

snip:

During his town hall meeting at the Denver Center for the Performing arts, John McCain gets testy with a vet when questioned on his lack of support for Jim Webb's GI Bill and other bills that he's voted against which would support veterans. Gee I wonder why the media decided not to cover this today and show the crazy lady screaming about taxes ...

3. Here's a link to his voting record on Vet related bills.
In mid 2007, Senator Reid noted that McCain missed 10 of the past 14 votes on Iraq. However, here is a summary of a dozen votes (two that he missed and ten that he voted against) with respect to Iraq, funding for veterans or for troops, including equipment and armor. I have also included other snippets related to the time period when the vote occurred.

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments. At the time, nearly 65% of people polled in a CNN poll indicted that "things are going either moderately badly or very badly in Iraq.

July 2007: McCain voted against a plan to drawdown troop levels in Iraq. At the time, an ABC poll found that 63% thought the invasion was not worth it, and a CBS News poll found that 72% of respondents wanted troops out within 2 years.

March 2007: McCain was too busy to vote on a bill that would require the start of a drawdown in troop levels within 120 days with a goal of withdrawing nearly all combat troops within one year. Around this time, an NBC News poll found that 55% of respondents indicated that the US goal of achieving victory in Iraq is not possible. This number has not moved significantly since then.

And the questioner was correct. McSame does not have a high rating among Vet groups.

Does McCain's Veteran Approval Rating Bother You??
This is how veteran organizations rate McCain:

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America - John McCain rating: D; versus Obama's B+ http://www.iava.org/full-ratings-list

Disabled American Veterans - John McCain rating: 20%; Obama's rating: 80%
http://capwiz.com/dav/scorecard.xc

Vietnam Veterans of America - John McCain rating: 15 votes against/ 9 votes for; Versus Obama's rating: 1 vote against/13 votes for veterans. http://capwiz.com/vva/e4/cinfo/?id=15730...

Watch McCain get taken to task by a vet for his Senate votes against increased health care for the VA in 2003, 4, 5, and 6 for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. McCain completely ignores the question and lies to a veteran....he does NOT "have a perfect voting record with every veteran group"....not even close. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzr3pdXqZ...

5. He's Starting To Piss Off Many Veterans
I got an email from an old friend who was a Green Beret in Nam and for the many years I worked with him was a proud Repugnican. His change began to occur shortly after 9/11 when he didn't buy the 9/11=Iraq and felt boooshie was a draft dodger and hypocrite for pretending to be a "Commander In Chief" when he never had any command experience. In '04 he voted, proudly, for Kerry. In the '00 primaries he was a big Gramps supporter, but now, like many others, he says he "doesn't recognize him anymore". His votes against the Webb ammenndment didn't fly past him, nor any of his friends. It also doesn't help that my buddy is a Marine...there's little love for "fly boys" who were enjoying cocktails in the officers club in Subic Bay or Okinawa while my friend was beating away the skeeters and fear of another patrol in the Mekong Delta.

It's interesting the corporate media has all but ignored the military vote this year...still playing platitudes to Gramps POW shtick and not looking at his record on "supporting the troops". A recent report showed Obama outraising Gramps by 6:1...and think about that for a sec. Many of these people don't have a lot of change to throw around...and my friend suggests that if the money is this high in Obama's favor, the military vote could be double that.

Here's hoping the GOOP is taking this vote for granted...they could wake up with some major surprises in states like Virginia and Florida on election day. Hopefully the Obama folk are reaching out to make sure these people get absentee ballots to many in the active service and reach out to their families here.

10. Look At How Few Veterans Come Out To Stand By Him
John Kerry had his "Band Of Brothers" in 2004 and even boooshie could get away with wrapping himself around a crowd of military-types, but you rarely see Gramps...a "true war hero" in such a setting. It's only been recently his campaign has had to drag some Swift boaters out of the weeds to defend him and then it appears reluctantly. Look at his campaign and he's surrounding himself with the same draft dodgers who have all but destroyed the military. This is another one of those below the radar stories that will be interesting to watch in the weeks ahead.

Cheers...

13. Most vets who back McCain are older guys who can be summed thusly:
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 03:27 PM by TexasObserver
They're still mad about Vietnam, and still think "we could have won it, if the politicians in Washington had let us, but the war protestors and the liberal media undermined the war with congress, and that's why we lost!"

We're never going to get those voters. They live in an alternate reality, and feeding their delusion is a lifelong commitment.

We should get the younger vets, however, who are living through the lies of the right about caring about them.

My experience with the VFW is probably what many of my fellow vets experienced. If you were a veteran of the Vietnam war, or of the war in the region, and you opposed the war thereafter, you were not welcome at many VFW halls. The VFW became the gathering point of all the angry vets who thought "we coulda won it!" They've been a fan club of Republican candidates for president ever since, and they always fall all over themselves for the kind of rah rah rah rhetoric jackoffs like McCain and Bush feed them.

14. Here's another link to a fairly new group (I think fairly new).
Some interesting stuff here, if it's true.

http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/

The one video of McSame going after Delores Alfond shows his temper quite clearly. His treatment of her is disgusting and shows his disregard for vets and I feel his low opinion and lack of respect for women in general. The look on his face is really ugly. It's the second video down. This is not a man I would want in charge of the local flea market, let alone in the Oval Office. He has too many anger issues that he seems to have a hard time repressing.
