Neil Cavuto Proclaims That, "The Cold War is Back"
On today's (August 14, 2008) your World w/Neil Cavuto, Fox's "business news" show, the thrust was all about steering the viewer to the conclusion that we must fear the Russians, or are they "the Soviets?," question our security, and that "the Cold War is back." It's the Neocons dream come true and if what Fox is up to is any indication, they're gonna make it happen, dammit!

After a report by Steve Harrigan in Georgia, Cavuto's first guest was Lawrence Eagleburger, who was George H.W. Bush's Secretary of State. After showing a clip of (the current) Secretary of State, Robert Gates saying, "If Russia does not step back from its aggressive posture and actions in Georgia, the U.S.-Russian relationship could be adversely affected for years to come," Cavuto proceeded to introduce him: "Think of those words: For years to come. Cold, stark words ring a cold hard bell, maybe like a Cold War bell?" Reaction now from Lawrence Eagleburger. "Mr. Secretary, is the Cold War back?"

Eagleburger: "No, it's not back yet, but it's on its way." With that he and Cavuto discussed oil and Europe; how Eagleburger thinks Russia aims to "pull back" some of the states that have spun off the old Soviet Union and how we "have to react to it as a whole" (with Europe).

Cavuto (whose line of questioning lead directly to his "Common Sense" segment at the end of the show), said a "Cold war costs a lot of money."

1. That's what they want.
This whole "terrorism" thing isn't working out the way they expected. It's too vague, there is no specific country to focus on, no real "us vs. them" with terrorism as it was with the Soviet Union. With the cold war it was easier to get away with the profiteering because of the nukes. No one really thinks terrorists can end the world but everyone knows the Russians can. It was a much easier bogeyman to sell and I think they want that back. "Tear down this wall", in retrospect, was a long run detriment to the right wing.
