Poll question: Question Regarding National Enquirer
Everyone knows the National Enquirer (NE) has photographers chasing famous people all the time. They have (or invented) dirt on almost every person who has an agent or manager.

But, what is the NE's motivation for which story(ies) they go after?

Choice 1: the NE only goes after people who don't threaten them with anthrax

Choice 2: only enemies of the owners of the NE are targeted, which simply mean that rumors that Laura Bush moved to the Mayflower Hotel and her marriage is on the rocks because Dumbya is screwing his Chocolate Fantasy are as newsworthy as Rush Limbaugh's pedophilia and drug use

Choice 3: money; the NE goes after whoever is popular at the moment

Choice 4: Both 1 & 2

Choice 5: 1, 2 & 3

Choice 6: Other (please elaborate in reply)

1. The National Enquirer's editor is a right-winger
I have to believe the ownership must also have some right-wing leaning tendencies. At the same time, it's not going on their cover unless it sells.

I've said this here before and I'll say it again: They hired a lot of investigative reporters that got RIF'ed from papers all over the country. They were the "paper of record" during the OJ trial, according to the NYT. They may get sued, but they nailed the Rush Limbaugh Oxycontin story, and they evidently nailed the John Edwards story as well.

We will know how the election goes as the National Enquirer's stories roll out over the next few months. If Barack Obama believes they don't have a dossier on him back to his kindergarten days, he needs a reality check, for instance. If we see a big expose on John McCain, the jig's up for him.

IMHO, YMMV,
Julie

2. I seriously doubt the NE will publish anything against McCain.
If they do, I suspect they will find anthrax in the mail.

3. Cold hard cash.
It's all money to them.

OTOH #1 sounds like a good survival strategy. I wouldn't antagonize someone if I knew they had anthrax.
