The way Democrats are handling the Edwards situation so far is an example of why the Republicans seem to always beat us to the punch when it comes to shaping public opinion.
It is a presidential election year and we have been given a gift with the Edwards shenanigans since the the Republican candidate is "guilty" of exactly the same thing that Edwards is "guilty" of, the moral failing of a national political figure.
This opens the door to discuss McCain's character, in fact every time Edwards is brought up by a talking head or right wing pundit the first thing out of any Dem surrogate's mouth should be: " Yes Mr. Edward's actions are terribly disappointing, yet at least he stayed with his wife unlike John McCain who traded in his wife for a younger richer less sick model".
It is absolutely an imperative that Democratic operatives bring up McCain's own moral failings as often as possible as our opponents would most definitely be holding this over Obama's head if he had been the one to throw over his crippled wife for a home wrecking pill head 20 years his junior. Hell, McCain has had the unmitigated gall to release a campaign ad saying Obama is bad for US families for Christs sake! The Rs know how to play the game, they know an attack will be forgiven by their base but also result in weakening their opponent's base.
OUr party has to stop sitting on the sidelines and waiting to counter punch Repub attacks, especially with a guy like McCain whose support on the right is already shallow.
Imagine the impact that ensuring everybody in this country is well aware of McCain dumping his first wife in exchange for a trust fund baby, drug addicted, serial recipe plagiarist?
Would the Rs let us have a pass on something this visceral and true to boot? Hells no, they would ram it down the publics throat every day and twice on Sunday because they know that the only thing that matters in an election is winning.
