When bizarro worlds collide
By: Attaturk Monday August 4, 2008 1:30 am

For those of you who follow professional football, I give you the bizarre story that just gets more bizarre.

Brett Favre, the guy who would be the Mario Cuomo of professional sports -- if dozens of boxers hadn't pre-dated the "I retire, I unretire" act, is back with the Green Bay Packers.

At least for now.

And then it gets strange.

Holy Lombardi! The Packers have hired Ari Fleischer as a consultant. That's right, that Ari Fleischer.

The Green Bay Packers have apparently decided they need a little help on the public relations front when it comes to handling the ongoing Brett Favre saga.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Packers will employ former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer for one month as a consultant.

Why? I have no frickin' idea. I thought Ari Fleischer was busy this Summer heading groups slandering Obama -- but I guess since the McCain campaign decided to cut out the middle-man on such things and do it themselves he has time on his hands.

This just in, the Chicago Bears, the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions are the new axis-of-evil.

Sadly, Matt Millen of the Lions just hired Scott McClellan.

1. And as an avid hard core Packer fan
I am saddened by this news. I am still a Packer fan and will be untilo I die, but Ari Fleisher? Yuck. My understanding is that it's just temporary though. Just until this whole Favre situation calms down.
And the Bears, Vikings and Lions are and always have been the axis of evil.

3. I gather the Packers are expecting a bad season?
Or maybe have a bunch of scandals about to come to light?

Why else pay for Ari's "shameless liar" expertise?

4. This must mean that Favre is in the right here.
You don't hire Ari unless you're doing something bad.

5. This is surreal
Not to offend Green Bay fans, but the front office has nobody to blame but themselves in this situation. If they didn't want him back in the first place, why not just trade him and let the chips fall where they may?

9. Because, they don't want to face him twice a season in a Vikings uniform.

11. Nickster, yeah, you're right
At the same time, they made that decision when they told him he wasn't going to start.

Let him go where he wants. If they've decided to go with Rodgers, they've made their bed.

12. Well, it's a game of chicken. They moved on and for some reason, Brett is looking to stick it to
them. I don't believe that Favre wants to play for the Packers at all, but because of his contract situation, he needs to force the Packers to let him go. The Packers don't want the fiasco to carry over to their regular season, so they are now pressured to do something by him showing up at training camp. I'm betting they end up doing a deal, but at the last minute, so Favre misses out on summer camp with the Vikes and is behind on learning their playbook. That's about all the Packers can do, unless they call Favre's bluff and say he can compete for the starting job. I really thought the 20 million dollar "marketing" offer was going to be enough to finish this issue, so I was shocked when I saw him throwing this morning on the news.

As a Bears fan, I'm finding this quite an amusing bit of political theater.

14. Look at the Sox and Manny
That deal was described euphemistically, but in reality Boston is paying for Manny to be a Dodger for the rest of the season. Isn't that basically what BF is angling for?

7. I am not a football fan
but I may have to start paying attention to it just so I can root against Green Bay & the Lions.

13. I can see the press statements now!
"We are winning the war against the Bears!"

"By lowering sky box tickets, we'll increase revenues."

"We have to defeat the Vikings here, otherwise they'll follow us home."

"The Lions have illegal linebackers of mass destruction."

17. What we call politics IS just a sporting event. Two teams...one owner.
At least as far as the MSM and power players behind the scenes are concerned. Rah!
