Democratic Underground Community:
My name is Asher Heimermann, 14, from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I’ve been active in politics and campaigns since I was in fifth grade. I have contacted Senators and Representatives in Washington, DC. Recently, I have been volunteering for Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
Today, I would like to draw attention to questions from people across the United States of America and the world asking me why I’m so active in politics at such a young age. I will try my best to educate you on why that is.
I got involved in politics after I was following the discussion in my hometown of Sheboygan of where to place a new police station for the Sheboygan Police Department. Shortly after that battle, a recall effort was under way of Mayor Juan Perez and that got me more interested in local politics.
In 2006, I got more interested and involved in national politics. As I stated before, I have been volunteering for Senator Obama’s presidential campaign. I choose to support Senator Obama because I felt that he is the best person to be President of the United States and change the political game in Washington. I was also able to have raised over $3,000 for Senator Obama’s campaign online.
I would like to inform you all that on August 12, I will be observing International Youth Day and I hope you will too. International Youth Day is a political day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to cultural and legal issues surrounding youth.
In closing, everyone has the power to make a difference. You can make a difference by; attending events, signing petitions, contacting your elected officials, and writing letters to your local newspapers. Use the First Amendment right of free speech and let your voice be heard. I know that I will continue to stay involved and follow politics and our government.
God Bless America,
Asher Heimermann
