Collision Closes Mississippi River At New OrleansKATC
July 23, 2008 NEW ORLEANS -- The Coast Guard closed 29 miles of the Mississippi River at New Orleans after a 600-foot tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided Wednesday, breaking the barge in half. Nobody was injured, but more than 419,000 gallons of heavy, almost tar-like fuel oil spilled from the barge, forming a slick 12 miles long, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman. The barge "was T-boned and split in half," she said.
The double-hulled tanker Tintomara was loaded with about 4.2 million gallons of biodiesel and nearly 1.3 million gallons of styrene, but was not leaking, said Michael Wilson, president of ship management company Laurin Maritime (America) Inc. in Houston.
The collision occurred about 1:30 a.m. CDT just upriver from the Crescent City Connection, a pair of bridges between New Orleans' east and west banks. A smell which many people thought was diesel was noticeable in the French Quarter and parts of New Orleans' central business district.
The river was closed about 3:30 a.m., about 45 minutes after someone reported a strong odor of diesel coming from the river, Young said. Tug boats were holding the halves of the barge in place, she said.

And then.......McCain's Louisiana Trip Postponed By DollyKATC
July 23, 2008 NEW ORLEANS -- Hurricane Dolly forced Republican John McCain on Wednesday to postpone a trip to Louisiana and planned meeting with Gov. Bobby Jindal.
McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was scheduled to meet with Jindal in New Orleans late Wednesday and then tour an oil rig platform on Thursday.
Melissa Sellers, Jindal's press secretary, confirmed the cancellations but directed further questions to McCain's campaign.
Tom Kise, a spokesman for the senator's campaign, said bad weather associated with the storm forced the postponement. Kise said a rescheduled date has not been chosen.

- I'm tellin' ya, this boy is snake-bit. When its bad, its bad everywhere. And yet the press (with its story lede) claims here that McFlame's oil-rig photo-op was postponed by "Dolly." In other words, "an act of nature." But I'm more inclined to believe that McGeezer's people didn't want a lot of MSM cameras rolling with McDoofus in the frame, showing the negative environmental impact of oil spills caused by us error-prone humans, and have that fresh in people's minds when he starts trying to make his case for more of the same.
So now with all the hoopla McCrotchety has been making about his support for off-shore oil drilling, I wonder why he didn't take this opportunity to show people just how swell we can cleanup those little occassional spills that we'll have -- oh, here and there. I mean don't you think that it was fortuitous that this should have happened right before he was planning to try and take the cameras off Barack Obama -- him with all those world leaders he's meeting -- and looking so.... PRESIDENTIAL, by flying off to have his own photo-op on an oil rig drilling in the Gulf of Mexico?
So what better example or opportunity could he have found of how we can minimize the impact that such disasters, "human errors" which might occur from time-to-time, so that he can show the American people that its no big deal to drill for oil offshore. And remember what its all about: CHEAP GAS!!!
So that we can continue to pollute the planet, kill ourselves and destroy our children's future, at a pace that we've become accustomed to. Besides, we're pumping so much garbage and sewerage (along with all those wonder drugs we take) into the sea right now from our big cities, that it's already becoming a wasteland in some areas. Pretty soon, drilling for oil will be safer than swimming there....==============================================================================
