South Carolina plans license plate for Christians
Source: cnn

Unless a federal court intervenes, South Carolina drivers may soon be able to profess their Christian faith with a state-issued license plate.

The state plans to issue plates featuring a Christian cross and the words "I Believe," but a group advocating the separation of church and state says that goes too far.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which includes Christian, Jewish and Hindu clergy, filed a federal lawsuit last month. The group contends that the plates violate the U.S. Constitution's prohibition against government favoring one religion over another religion or non-religion.

While individuals can ask the DMV to print plates for other faiths -- for a $4,000 fee -- the request would be subject to significant limits and rules not imposed for the Christian plate. Other tags could feature a religious symbol -- such as the Star of David -- but no words would be allowed.

It is ok because even if you are not a Christian you can get a license plate of your own, with your own religious symbol on it.

Of course, it can't have any words and it will cost you $4000.00 to get something different.

Never mind the fact that if this is how the government of South Carolina is acting, you might not really want to make your religion widely known if you are anything but Christian.

As a Floridian, I am happy to say that this is based on idea that was rejected down here.

8. Lordy, yes. I only pass about 20 churches in my neighborhood, alone.
In my rag of a newspaper, there's a whole section devoted to the christian agenda EVERY DAY and yet they keep screaming they're being persecuted. Give me a fucking break!

3. I'm surprised. I'd didn't realize they rejected bad ideas in Florida.
I thought I'd read they had a plan for elections using a show of hands for voting. ;-)

6. Wouldn't a "Nutjob on Board" sticker be cheaper?
Or a Fundie radio station sticker?

And why do public tax dollars go to something like this? Argh.

I want one that says, "I DON'T believe."

9. "this is based on idea that was rejected down here"
But we still have the anti-choice, doctor-shooting crowd and their "Choose Life!" plates.

10. A $4000 setup fee? Holy Shit!
I understand that Illustrator is a hard program to use and all, but y'know, I just happen to have my OWN copy of Illustrator. If I were to send the license plate I want in on a CD, would they waive the setup charges?
