U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) calls $50 billion to combat AIDS "just completely irresponsible"
DeMint leads GOP charge to block Bush AIDS funding

He calls $50 billion expansion of program ‘irresponsible’

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint on Wednesday spearheaded Republican opposition to a $50 billion expansion of President Bush’s signature program to combat AIDS in Africa and elsewhere overseas.

DeMint, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and five other Republican senators blocked Senate consideration of a bill that would more than triple U.S. aid to nations most stricken by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and to international relief groups helping them.

“For us to attempt to buy friendship around the world by spending $50 billion is just completely irresponsible,” DeMint said. “There are enough worthy causes around the world to bankrupt us a hundred times over.”

Bush would like Congress to pass what he calls the “President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief” before he leaves for the Group of Eight summit early next month.

1. But spending a trillion dollars on Iraq is very responsible, right?
One of these elections, South Carolina will stop voting these national embarrassments into office.

I would much rather see this money spent in this country

you have thousands of people with HIV and AIDS in this country who can't afford meds; you have kids going to bed hungry

you have mentally ill people who are out on the streets being a danger to themselves and to others

we could find ways to spend it here

6. Yeah, but that $850 billion in Iraq and Afghanistan makes me think DeMint SUCKS.
We could find ways to spend it here, and we could have found ways to spend the $850 billion.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

4. At least he's worried about bankruptcy. Bush wants to spend all over the place.
Besides, the next president will be able to buy that much friendship and not be pegged as 'buying favors'.

5. Every now and then, like a groundhog, DeMint sticks his head up
and makes me think having Isakson and Chambliss as my senators might actually not be the very scummy bottom of a very deep barrel. Almost, anyway.

7. Oh... and $3 TRILLION for a completely pointless and unnecessary war isn't irresponsible?

8. There was a troll right here at DU, a few days ago, that also wailed and gnashed his teeth
over how much "his taxpayer money" was being spent on AIDS research. Their greatest fear must be that a cure be found. These psychos truly do NOT want it to happen.

9. So much for "compassionate conservatism."
Those poor people will die an unnecessarily long and wasteful death but in the eyes of congress members such as DeMint, "they didn't vote for me, serves 'em right."

:sarcasm:
