I think I've found my scooter!!!!
Does anyone know about the evtamerica scooters? I've read some reviews from happy owners.

http://www.evtamerica.com/r_20.htm

I've been looking around for a while, and I can go 35-40 miles on this one without "using oil" (not counting the oil it takes to deliver it, manufacture it, make the batteries, etc.)

It's electric, speeds up to 45 mph, and charges on less than 2.5kw. And cute and pretty? Shut UP!

I use wind energy, so I don't have to power it with fossil fuel. Batteries last up to two years.

2. I didn't fancy grocery shopping with a backpack
so I got mine with wire panniers at http://www.egovehicles.com

It was cheaper and 5 years later, the only work I've done on it is replace one inner tube. The batteries are still taking a full charge.

Nobody's laughing at it these days, either.

9. I'm still thinking about those too
And there's the motor you can add on to your bike for about $275.

3. Where would you get it serviced in Texas?
Looks like good clean transportation though. The service thing would scare me and 40 miles isn't all that far if you are out of town aways.

Good Luck.

I'll stick with my "scooter" in the meantime (60mpg hwy / 45mpg city)

7. Really?!? 60mpg highway???
I have a hard time believing any HD is capable of that. Although maybe the little ones (ha-ha...a little Harley) could swing it.

Now, an old Aeromacchi could do it <sigh>

20. Yes, it gets between 58-61mpg highway.
It is the little Harley, although that's like having the smallest yacht in Monaco...it's still a large motorcycle.

I use it unless I have to haul or tow something, then I dust off the Ford Bronco. Lately, the Bronco is getting really dusty!

21. Well I have you there
I do everything with my Kawi, except move ladders. But then I never have to haul or tow anything bigger than a few cinder blocks or some small drums. What's the displacement?

8. Maybe when I grow up, I can ride one of those
The last time I tried to ride a big scooter by myself (an old Norton 750), it started leaning at the stop sign, and well, you know what happened then.

4. I'd be interested...
I drive 18 miles each way but there is NO bikeable route and no ready bus option. If I could charge at work, this would certainly be a spring/summer/fall solution.

If you do buy one, I hope you will pm me to check in....

6. It *is* cute!
But I'd worry about the range. A lot. You'd have to be very careful about "oh, just a quick jaunt to pick up some more milk on the way home."

11. I really would use it to do neighborhood stuff
I put about 100 miles a week just around this sprawly suburban neighborhood. I would still ride the bus to work. I'd plug it in every night.

30 cents go go 45 miles and not a penny to the oil companies. That's what I'm talking!

10. And you can charge it with wind power? Good damn deal, and good for you for
spending the bucks to set up your wind-energy setup.

You've done your part to help us all. Now, if the cost of PV panels would get down to $1.00 per watt, maybe I could get our system on the roof...

12. I have to buy the wind power
off the grid. Where we live, the wind is rated the big POOR for a home generator.

Now if we were closer to Galveston . . .

14. Awriight!
Another sparkie!

I've got what Warpy's got. Love it! Little different niche than the evt, but suits my situation nicely. Nobody gets torqued if you include a sidewalk or bike lane in your route-selection. We've got plug-in parking where I work, too.

15. There's an EVT for sale in Austin right now
But it's one of those modern looking ones, and I'm a retro retro.

And you and Warpy would be safer on the sidewalks here in sprawlsville. The Woodlands has the bike paths, but I'm on the poor side of the freeway and we have ditches and no shoulders. I will be braving a few blocks of Hummer streets to get to the side streets, but once there, I can cut through and get around pretty nicely.

28. I hear that the really cute ones get stolen
Especially the modern looking ones. Makes me think that maybe an old Honda Elite is the way to go. It would probably be as unlikely as my old Volvo to get stolen.

22. Can you rig up some speakers and an mp3 file that goes
RING-ding ding ding ding ding ding....

I dunno, for me, without the 2-stroke sound I'm not sure it's really a classic scooter.

(of course the smell and the smoke I'd gladly do without.)

25. I've read some other scooterers feel the same way
One guy said he could hear the couple in the SUV next to him having a bitter argument. He said he could do without that. But yes, I think most scooters can be rigged for sound. I've found several.

And I decided on spending a little more for an electric because if it holds together, it will pay for itself pretty quickly and with my electricity, it does reduce my footprint.

And I just luuuuvvvv not giving the oil companies a dime. Oh, wait, they will probably lobby to have them outlawed or buy out the manufacturers.

23. I've actually been looking at some Honda scooters online
I've actually been looking at some Honda scooters online. Low end prices for brand new ones are app. $2,000 (which fits into my budget), and I could easily take the side streets to work to avoid the highways (although Honda writes that the scooters are both street legal and highway-drivable, I have a difficult time imagining myself driving to work on I-30 in a scooter! That's the perfect recipe for an ending to bad movie)

But being the first time I've ever seriously considered looking at one, I was amazed by the "coolness" factor they've got.

27. Ewwwww cooties!
I see a lot of people traveling on the sidewalks with those in Austin and Galveston. I think the transportation part of the pic is way cool, but the smirk makes me wonder if Darth is thinking, "I'm going to make a policy that outlaws anything that doesn't run on fossil fuel, or rather, McCain will."
