.S. Rep. Chris Cannon appeared to be in trouble Tuesday in his bid for a seventh term as a challenger making a first run for office was ahead with more than half the precincts reporting in the Republican primary.

It was Cannon's third consecutive primary battle in Utah's 3rd District. Jason Chaffetz is a former Brigham Young University football player who served as chief of staff for popular Republican Gov. Jon Huntsman. With 69 percent of precincts reporting, he led Cannon with 61 percent of the vote.

Now, mind you, Chaffetz seems to be a little bit to the right of the blowhard Cannon -- but in the coming 107th Congress and an even larger Democratic majority, and assuming Chaffetz wins, the constituents of Utah's notoriously regressive Third District will find themselves more marginalized than ever, pushed even further to the fringe of American politics.
