McCain adviser: Another attack on the U.S. ‘would be a big advantage’ for McCain.»

Earlier this year, after former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto was tragically assassinated, pundits speculated that the shocking attack may have benefited Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) politically. Now, McCain’s chief strategist, Charlie Black, tells Fortune that the “unfortunate event” of Bhutto’s death “helped us.” Asked if another terrorist attack on U.S. soil would help McCain as well, Black told Fortune that it would be “a big advantage to him“:

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an “unfortunate event,” says Black. “But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who’s ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us.” As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. “Certainly it would be a big advantage to him,” says Black.

Update: Kevin Drum also points out that when asked about the "gravest long-term threat to the U.S. economy," McCain replies, "Islamic extremism."

1. Rather, I think that it would be the culmination of Bush policy failure
which Jack McCain has promised to continue.

3. I wonder what it is like to have policies that people will flock to only
when they are being terrorized.

4. Republicans aren't above hoping for it, lying about new threats...
...or taking action in Iran before the election.

13. Then McCain's a liar, to boot. I wish a 'journalist' would have
gotten into it a bit more.

12. Another Rethug said something similar
We need to keep a list of all of them who are making this an election matter. They should be taken out in chains.

14. The best way to frame this is to attach it to the GOP.
Don't allow the GOP PR Machine to say this is an "isolated incident". This is a perfect example of the GOP mindset and not--not--limited to just the one guy.

Admiral McCombover will "ask for his resignation" so the GOPher who said it will "disappear" from the headlines.

We have to remind people that another member of the GOP has tried to benefit from terror.
