Do you guys all realize how serious this Mississippi flood is?
This is really scary. I have lived in the midwest all my life and can't remember the Mississippi River ever flooding. I can remember the 93 flood well but that was the Missouri River. And it was horrible.

If our current textbooks are right, the Missouri River is the longest in the US but the Mississippi has the most water.

The levees are old and they don't maintain them like they should. ( Just like the bridges.)

Another scary thing is that after the 93 floods here, they really didn't do much to repair the levees on the Missouri. It's expensive (and hard) to control a river.

This is going to be really bad. Really really bad.

5. Not really
I live maybe 7 or 8 miles from the Missouri River. About 3 or 4 miles from the Kansas River. And 200 miles from the Mississippi.

I do have a couple inches of water in my basement.

And I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night :)

2. Didn't they close most of the the bridges
in Iowa and Illinois on the Mississippi in '93? I thought that was because of the flooding then? We were camping on the wrong side of it from home and I remember feeling rather fortunate we got back before they closed the bridges down.

10. Yes they did
but the flood of 93 was the Missouri River, not the Mississippi. I remember they said in 93 it would take a tremendous amount of rain for the Mississippi to ever flood.

41. I lived in NW Missouri in 93 and have family in St. Louis
The Mighty Miss did flood in 93 but the Missouri received all the attention. I remember I29 was closed for 80 miles or more at one point due to high water.

You indicate you live on the west side of the state and I am sure that 93 Missouri River flooding was foremost in your mind because of local news.

The flooding in 93 didn't affect Iowa as much as this one and that has lead to more flooding upstream from St. Louis on the Miss.

I remember coverage of the floods in 93 as it moved south, Southern Missouri and Illinois were hit pretty hard.

We have to get the war on.

I didn't realize it was so bad, proud. I'll be watching, and I hope you stay high and dry.

13. I am fine
I live in a fancy dancy suburb with great infrastructure and storm sewers. Over in Missouri, though, the storm sewers are really bad. They have water standing on the streets when it rains even a little.

If it floods over there, I will have to lock my doors to keep evlbstrd and my other MO friends from coming over here and expecting me to shelter them. :hide:

15. I believe that since the Mississippi widens considerably
south of Missouri, those flood waters up north won't be a problem for NO.

BUT I never thought I would ever see the Mississippi flood either. :scared:

Holding back a lot of additional water... hard to know how many levees are in danger of breeching too... it's hard to know for sure because no one is telling us anything.

6. Yes, I have family there...
I'm getting updates on our family website... horrible... seems that all our information is sketchy too... numbers are changing... hard to find a good count on how many homes have been lost, people misplaced, people now homeless, acres of corn destroyed... it's horrible!

Now, I'm Irish... and I appreciate a good wake, but the media needs to bury Russert already and report the real news! Yes, I'm sorry that Tiger Woods needs more knee surgery, but we have people being flooded out of their homes FCOL!!!

There's so little on the InterTubes too... except a lot of really scary pictures.

where the Missouri runs into it (or vice-versa depending on your riverphilia) ;-)

Bettendorf, Iowa, and Davenport (just to the west) had some horrible flooding that year. Hundreds of houses were damaged/destroyed as a result...

20. proud: check out the damage in '93 on the Kansas River...
at Tuttle Creek Dam (Manhattan) and Lake Milford (Junction City)...

Milford was so full (Corps of Engineers could not release water because of the tremendous flooding on down the line) that a 'river' broke out on one side of the dam and created a new river running about a mile parallel to the main river bed...

The whole Missouri River chain (check out NOAA's river info-all of the dams/CoE project dams are defined) was kept full to attempt to keep the Mississippi from becoming even worse than it was...

and, things did not work out well throughout the whole system

8. Yes I do and it worries me to death
Knowing the horrible shape all those levees are in, puts my stomach in a knot.
My heart goes out to all these people, praying for them constantly.

I go from heartbreak to anger. They knew how important those levees were to
the safety of so many. Did nothing! That is what happens when a bunch of danged
grasshoppers are in charge of peoples safety.

25. two other "great " mississippi floods
1927 and 1965. my friends and i sandbagged in rock island during the 65 flood.after the 65 flood the corp of engineers built the levee systems that failed in the 93 and have failed in this flood.

it`s time to rethink the concept of levees along the river.

latest weather predictions-rain 5 out of the next 7 days across the flooded area.

38. Levees don't work (in the long run). Nature has a better idea:
riparian ecosystems (riverside forests) and wetlands. Which would, interestingly enough, also help mitigate those goddamned "dead zones", too.

But nobody asked my opinion. They just keep building levees.
