Human genes in commercially made Frankenfood
When I read this I thought it was a bad Sci-fi plot but its FUCKING REAL!

The first GM food crop containing human genes is set to be approved for commercial production.

The laboratory-created rice produces some of the human proteins found in breast milk and saliva.

Its U.S. developers say they could be used to treat children with diarrhoea, a major killer in the Third World.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! AAAAAAAAAAAAH! HELP! HELP! HELP!

Am I going to develop black and white spots too?

Will I grow into an even bigger cow?

Will I start mooing?

Will I eat grass? (Actually, I think that's already happened, but I didn't approve of it.)

As for the human genes, you may want to consult the survivors of the Donner Party for more info on that. I think that changed them, but I highly doubt it was anything to do with the genes.

9. The 100 million that died
during the Flu deaths in the early part of the century will be a PICNIC compared to what will happen if human genes are tossed out there for Nature to use at will, usually there needs to be a Pig/Bird chain of command for viral mutations before it ever gets to people..

what happens when the virus just SKIPS the pigs and birds completely?

EVERYONE Dies.

40 years ago at the Asilomar conference the scientists were ONLY THEN creating a series of safeguards against E COLI being misused in the labs, someone was really CLOSE to creating some E COLI that would REPLACE the ones in the Guts of EVERY Mammal on the planet, that digest food.

If they get replaced and mammals cannot DIGEST food, they will all DIE.

This is very serious, the implications for disease alone are HORRIFYING...

Just thought I'd let you know that it IS a problem.. :)

6. I know that
our regulations in this country suck...but do you guys think anything genetically altered is bad? What if this can actually help people? I mean if they can alter something to have more of what humans neeed..why wouldn't it be good? I don't know much about this issue so please don't jump on me too harshly.

13. Amen. n/t
Why is the solution always something that will either destroy the environment or destroy people? Can't just solve the problem, must throw bandaids on everything.

14. I have never understood the vicious hate some people have for GMOs.
As a Biotech major who is fairly knowledgeable on the subject most of the problems with GMOs lie in regulation, not the technology itself. The problem is that Monsanto and Co. tend to abuse the technology, not because the technology is inherently bad.

I've been hoping we start putting human genes in our crops, this is very cool.
