They list farmers markets and more all over Southern California. We're doing our best to do much of our shopping there.

If your area has a farmer's market, add them to this thread!

2. I picked up our first veggie share at our local CSA last week.
I have three varieties of lettuce & some other greens I don't even recognize! Last night I made a stir fry with the unrecognized greens & served over brown rice. Very tasty! I suspect an element of their great taste derived from knowing they were grown locally. ;)

Next year I hope to buy a whole share & donate half to the local food shelter.

3. The farmers market in my town is not produce from local farmers...
it's more like a flea market with antiques, crafts etc. Wish it had more produce.

6. I think that's the case where my mom and dad live
My mom, who lives in southern Ohio, was telling me about their farmers' market in February. I was like, "What the hell are they selling in February?" I think it's mostly a craft market.

5. I took my 14-month-old to the farmers market on Saturday
It's still more expensive than the grocery store, but the gap is closing as grocery store prices keep going up. And the quality is always far better. Grocery store tomatoes may be cheaper, but it doesn't matter if half of them go bad before you eat them.

We bought a giant head of red lettuce, some cilantro, a pint of strawberries, and three tomatoes for $10. Not bad.

It's a good thing they had strawberries. My daughter would eat nothing but strawberries if it were up to her.

10. We are very fortunate here in Eastern PA
we have a lot of local farms, and many different ethnic groups, each with their preferred vegetables and spices, etc. we live five minutes from a local farmers market and it is very enjoyable to shop there. Several years ago, we bought a small freezer forfrozen storage of meats and vegetables bought in season. We also really enjoy growing our own vegies, especially salads greens and tomatos, and we have a producing fig tree in our yard as well. We have grown strawberries, raspberries ans a few grapes, and have blueberries that are just beginning to turn blue this week. My wife loves to grow herbs, especially varities of basil, which we dry and use all year. I also want to recommend Swiss Chard, a vegetable that can be used like spinach, and grows even through the snow. Fresh garden stuff in February.

11. Is it really that much cheaper to buy local?

Its been a while, but the last time I was at a farmers market, the prices weren't that much lower.

I really need to do some comparison shopping.
