New poll: Obama has NEVADA in play. "Statistical tie, a toss-up"

As the presidential candidates square off for the general election, Nevadans are closely divided between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, according to a statewide poll.

If the election were held today, 44 percent would vote for McCain, 42 percent for Obama, while 14 percent of likely voters remain undecided, according to the poll of 625 likely voters, conducted Monday through Wednesday by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. for the Review-Journal and reviewjournal.com.

The presidential contest is well within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. It confirms the conventional wisdom that Nevada is a swing state that might throw its electoral votes to either candidate in November.

"It's a statistical tie. It's a toss-up," said pollster Brad Coker, managing partner of Mason-Dixon. "Nevada is a battleground. It's clearly a state both candidates, both campaigns, both parties are going to pay a lot of attention to.

2. You're mistaken.

It was reliably Republican 10 years ago. But the state's gone thru a lot of demographic changes (more Hispanics, more union households, more Walmartized communities), plus all the added population creates a need for greater economic infrastructure (water utilities, more roads, more urban community resources). All of these trends tend to make the state more Democratic.

Both the Gore & Kerry campaigns dreamed & schemed about taking Nevada out of the red column. It will definitely be "in play" over the next 3-4 elections.

5. Barack just has to go out there a few times and talk about Yucca Mountain.....

and the mortgage crisis, and bloggers need to remind Nevada of McCain's Keating 5 experience in dealing with Banks.

6. McCain actively supported Yucca Mountain Repository.

He stated this on 5/28/2008:

I would seek to establish an international repository for spent nuclear fuel that could collect and safely store materials overseas that might otherwise be reprocessed to acquire bomb-grade materials. It is even possible that such an international center could make it unnecessary to open the proposed spent nuclear fuel storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

He changed his tune when it looked like Nevada was going to be close. He hasn't called for shutting down Yucca Mountain like all the Democrats have but is now claiming that through reprocessing the waste and an international repository it won't be necessary.


Yet, here is what his position was a few weeks ago:

Less than three weeks ago, Reuters ran a piece that said McCain “supports the Yucca Mountain storage facility and believes opposition to it is harmful to U.S. interests.” And the piece quoted one of his advisers as saying, “The political opposition to the Yucca Mountain storage facility is harmful to the U.S. interest and the facility should be completed, opened and utilized.”

Here's his position from over a year ago:

Just over a year ago, he was described as adopting a mocking tone when he told the Deseret News in Utah: “Oh, you have to travel through states ... I am for Yucca Mountain. I’m for storage facilities. It’s a lot better than sitting outside power plants all over America.”
