What is going on with the Clintons?

In the last few days Hillary and Bill seem to be in some bizarre contest to determine which of them is more detached from reality.

First Hillary came out Friday and justified her delusional determination to remain in an un-winnable primary by invoking the tragic assassination of Bobby Kennedy, her fourth such disgusting reference in the last three months. Then she added insult to injury with her weasely, half-hearted apology to anyone if they found her comments offensive.

Yeah, as in she’s sorry if Sen. Obama was disturbed by her repeated suggestion that the possibility of his assassination is a central reason she refuses to admit she’s already lost. Isn’t that a morbid, pathetic admission that her best chance at winning comes if the other, stronger candidate dies? Yikes. Or perhaps her tepid apology was aimed at Sen. Ted Kennedy, who having been recently diagnosed with brain cancer might have been upset over her casual, callous reference to his brother’s traumatic death just two weeks shy of that awful, heartbreaking anniversary.

And amazingly, she’s playing the victim in this disgusting drama she’s created, as evidenced by this editorial she wrote for today’s edition of The New York Post: "I was deeply dismayed and disturbed that my comment would be construed in a way that flies in the face of everything I stand for - and everything I am fighting for in this election. And today, I would like to more fully answer the question I was asked: Why do I continue to run, even in the face of calls from pundits and politicians for me to leave this race? . . . I believe I won a 40-point victory two weeks ago in West Virginia and a 35-point victory in Kentucky this past week - despite voters being repeatedly told this race is over - because I'm standing up for them."Poor Hillary. She’s dismayed and disturbed over the aftermath of hurtful comments she made. We should all feel sorry for her?

Possibly the only good thing to result from her unbelievably cold, calculating political maneuvering and irrational reasoning that she should stay put because there’s a chance the other candidate (shhhh . . .you know, the minority candidate . . .are you listening rural White Americans?) might not make it, literally, is that it "obliterates" any thought of her being a vice presidential candidate. Ever. Can you imagine a candidate – any candidate – selecting her as a running mate knowing how desperate she (and/or Bill) is to be President at any cost by any dirty trick necessary? And after all her creepy references to political assassinations? Can you imagine a President who has to beef up the security detail anytime the VP is in the house? We’ve survived one trigger-happy shoot-em-up Veep; we don’t need another. Hillary claims she’d be the better candidate to defeat McCain in November. Can you see the match-up between McCain and Clinton? The demented vs. the delusional – which would you rather have?

And as off-the-chart irrational as Hillary’s perceived victim hood is (brought about by her own words and those of Bill’s ) and her ongoing denial of her electoral math problem, it pales in comparison with her hubby’s declaration today that she’s actually winning, but shhhhh, it’s a secret. No, I’m not kidding; he means that.

"She is winning the general election today and (Obama) is not, according to all the evidence," Bill Clinton said in an address to 200 people in South Dakota yesterday, continuing "If you vote for her and she does well in Montana and she does well in Puerto Rico, when this is over she will be ahead in the popular vote, and they're trying to get her to cry uncle." Then Bill rambled on a little madly about secrets and polls: "There is another Electoral College poll that I saw yesterday had her over 300 electoral votes, yeah. She will win the general election is you nominate her. They're just trying to make sure you don't."

Say what? The only way Hillary wins any majority is if you count the votes in the states where the voters went into the voting booths knowing their votes didn’t count – Florida and Michigan. Hardly a fair election, especially considering Hillary’s name was the ONLY name on the ballot in Michigan, talk about bias. But never mind; back to Fantasy Island:

The potential First Gentleman then detailed the vast conspiracy by a gaggle of evil pundits who want to pressure the super-delegates to vote for Sen. Obama, despite the fact that his wife is winning the race. Clinton explained the cover-up plot to the audience: "I can’t believe it. It is just frantic the way they (the pundits) are trying to push and pressure and bully all these super-delegates to come out. ‘"Oh, this is so terrible: The people they want her. Oh, this is so terrible: She is winning the general election, and he is not. Oh my goodness, we have to cover this up.'" So, there it is: According to Bill a secret pundit conspiracy exists to cover-up the magical math that Hillary is winning the race if you count the votes that cannot be counted because they were unfairly cast. Besides, you never know what might happen to Sen. Obama (hint: think Sirhan Sirhan) so we’re practically back in the Oval Office!

How much does he miss that place, anyway? Did he squirrel away some sort of secret file under a desk in the West Wing? Some sort of directive from, um, aliens? A packet of love letters from Barbara Bush?

Makes you wonder if he’s finally started inhaling.
