The death yesterday of a man attacked by neo-Nazis threw the spotlight on political activism in Italy, prompting the opposition to ask if a right-wing sweep in an April election has fed a climate of intolerance.
The victim, Nicola Tommasoli, a 29-year-old industrial designer, finally succumbed to his injuries after being beaten into a coma in Verona last Thursday by a group of youths identified by police as neo-Nazi soccer hooligans.
The ANSA news agency reported the attack occurred after Mr. Tommasoli refused to hand over his cigarettes to members of the Veneto Skinhead Front, many of whom are also hard-core fans of Verona's soccer team. Police have arrested three men, aged 19 and 20, and are searching for two others.
