Democrats seeking to topple Kentucky's senior senator, Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, take to the airwaves tonight at 7 p.m. live on KET to debate who among the seven candidates should win the May 20 primary.
The three best-known and best-financed candidates are Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsford; Greg Fischer, also a Louisville businessman; and Louisville physician Mike Cassaro.
Also to appear in the 90-minute debate are Democrats David Wylie,a postal service union representative; James E. Rice, a warehouse worker from Campbellsville; David L. Williams, a retired telephone construction company executive from Glasgow; and Kenneth Stepp, a Manchester lawyer.
Republican candidates won't debate. McConnell does not plan to attend and challenger Daniel Essek, a truck driver from Whitley County, can't get off work.
Essek said he has asked KET to apologize to viewers.
"I really wanted to be there,'' Essek said today.
He couldn't get off work to take part in the debate? That's too rich!
