McCain says "League of Nations" needs to deal with Iran
http://www.americablog.com/2008/05/mccain-says-league-of-nations-needs-to.html

Too bad the League of Nations was disbanded in 1946 when John McCain was ten years old. Oh, and one of our commenters added this:

Reminds me of Mr. Burns at the Post Office:

"Yes, I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"

(video at the link)

League of Nations????? WTF???? Is he talking about another coalition of the unwilling, or the old League of Nations??? He spoke to the leader of France? Big deal. Is France going to send troops? Lawyers guns and money? Don't look now, McSame, but the current French pretzlenut isn't exactly popular anymore.

1. McCain's next sentence:
"Oh, wait, there is no League of Nations. I guess that means that the United States of America will have to take care of Iran. Draft!"

But it did, then the countries of the world took a vote and we ignored it.

As the most powerful nation on earth we have a responsibility to set an example and we blew it. If the UN doesn't work, it's our own fault.

53. Sorry...the US shouldn't own that alone
After all, we see how well Oil for Food worked, and how many of the upper echelon (sp?) of the UN had their hands in the till. Countries known for torture and abuse having seats on commissions working against such things.

I know it's nuanced, but the US isn't the only black hat here, not by a damned sight.

The UN is, charitably put, dysfunctional regarding anything outside of children's issues and feeding people.

55. I was hoping you would bring up Oil-for-Food.
"Sixty percent of Iraq's twenty-six million people were solely dependent on rations from the oil-for-food plan."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_for_Food

Math: 15M people were kept alive by OFF. Was there bribery, graft and corruption? You bet, and likely we were complicit:

"US Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan) is quoted in an interview for the New York Times as saying, "There is no question that the bulk of the illicit oil revenues came from the open sale of Iraqi oil to Jordan and to Turkey, and that that was a way of going around the Oil-for-Food Programme we were fully aware of the bypass and looked the other way."

Likely $10B disappeared under the auspices of OFF. How many $B are unaccounted for under the auspices of Halliburton and KBR?

A little perspective is appropriate.

Edited on Tue May-06-08 01:20 AM by Duke Newcombe
...to what, clean up the UN? We're responsible by omission? As if corruption and dysfunction has not existed in that body for decades before OFF?

Perspective, indeed.

62. More perspective.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_nations

The UN is home to:

International Court of Justice
International Atomic Energy Agency
International Civil Aviation Organization
International Fund for Agricultural Development
International Labour Organization
International Maritime Organization
International Telecommunication Union
Food and Agriculture Organization
UNESCO
United Nations Industrial Development Organization
Universal Postal Union
World Bank
World Health Organization
World Intellectual Property Organization
World Meteorological Organization

not to mention:

The Human Security Report 2005,<21> produced by the Human Security Centre at the University of British Columbia with support from several governments and foundations, documented a dramatic, but largely unrecognized, decline in the number of wars, genocides and human rights abuses since the end of the Cold War. Statistics include:

* a 40% drop in violent conflict;
* an 80% drop in the most deadly conflicts; and
* an 80% drop in genocide and policide.

The report argued that international activism — mostly spearheaded by the UN — has been the main cause of the post–Cold War decline in armed conflict, though the report indicated the evidence for this contention is mostly circumstantial.

In the area of Peacekeeping, successes include:

* A 2005 RAND Corp study found the UN to be successful in two out of three peacekeeping efforts. It also compared UN nation-building efforts to those of the U.S., and found that of eight UN cases, seven are at peace, whereas of eight U.S. cases, four are at peace.<22>

Bottom line: what's wrong with the UN is a drop in the bucket compared to what's right.

In any debate, weak assertions weaken the whole argument.

The weak assertion that he thought that the League of Nations still existed based on this statement which clearly shows nothing of the sort weakens the whole argument.

If you can't deal with that, go drive your scooter somewhere else.

...and those loonies weaken the group.

I'm assuming that you watched the clip. McCain clearly said "a league of nations" and not "the League of Nations", correct?

Assuming we agree on that (and if we don't, you need a hearing test) do you feel that it strengthens our fight to misrepresent what he said? Is it "defending" him to state an obvious truth?

People who advocate this sort of thinking, on both sides, harm us all. If that position makes me a Porsche-driving (astute assumption, by the way) elitist card-carrying DLC member (you couldn't be more wrong) in your view, so be it.

It's my position that your trivialities and cheap shots harm our effort.

I have no idea what "The "I hate the UN" is a Republican dog Whistle" has to do with our discussion...I simply stated the obvious fact that the OP misrepresented what McCain actually said...and you chose to turn it into a discussion about the car I drive.

It's not a breach of "loyalty" to state facts and to adhere to a single standard when judging statements, regardless of who makes them.

He has an idea to replace the UN so that only democratic governments (roughly 120 of the 190 governments on earth) are allowed in. Autocratic governments are not.

However he also wants to kick russia out of the G8, even though Russia is a democracy. Its not a liberal democracy, but it is still technically a democracy. And you can't exclude China from global discussions on anything anymore, even if they aren't a democracy.
