Watch this. Then I dare you to defend these "people" and worry about government intervention. As one of the women says "I'm afraid of another Jonestown"

I read the book that was out recently about them (sorry, brainfart, I can't remember the title, I saw it on another thread...)and it was pretty shocking. This is not a defensible group. their 'religion' is far to the pale of mainstream Mormonism. What is going to bring them down is not polygamy, that's done in secret by several groups, but the systematic sexual exploitation of minor girls.

13. "Under the Banner of Heaven" is the book I think you're not quite
remembering. :D

Polygamy doesn't bother me, but what these people do can hardly be classed as polygamy. As you said, sexual exploitation, I'd go so far as to say sexual slavery would be more valid terms for what they practice.

I wish the media would get its mind out of the gutter and focus on what's important rather than the polygamy angle.

35. I think that may be why the situation has been largely ignored by
national press. They see it only as men with several wives (heh, heh, heh, cue the "henpecked" joke for Mr. Leno) and didn't even begin to consider the age of the females and what is done to the teenaged boys.

It's ripe for national media--a "strange" social practice, a cultish distortion of a major religion, child abuse and abandonment, rampant local corruption of the media, law enforcement, and government, HUGE, systematic welfare fraud, weapons stockpiling, etc.

But like some DUers, all they see is the polygamy and they really don't even bother to try to understand the depth of the problem,

38. Oh yeah.
I just had a very brief discussion with a DUer about what she perceived as polygamy. Oh yeah. The media will have a field day distorting this into some XXX-rated wet dreams for a bunch of sick F(*&ks.

Trying to get the focus OFF polygamy and onto what is really happening is really enlightening and frustrating.

7. The women get the worst of it, but the teenage boys are also victims.
There can only be so many men. The extra boys get thrown out on the streets.

It's a heartbreaking video, and it also made me really mad.

"Lost Boys" is the name of a video, movie or book about what the boys go through.

21. I'm in tears, absolute tears. This has gone on way too long.
As an Arizonan, I've known about this for 2o some years. The FLDS owns the media, the law enforcement, and government in northern Arizona so it's never been as exposed as it should be.

23. That explains a lot - your being in AZ.
I've from Las Vegas, NV originally. For those of you who don't know, LV began as a Mormon settlement. The LDS people and church owned a lot of the LV valley until they leased it or sold it to the Mafia. I grew up with the "Mormon mafia" and "La Cosa Nostra". Yeah, I got a few stories. :D

My grandfather (on my mom's side) was LDS. That makes me about a 1/4 LDS, I guess. Most of my years growing up I had LDS friends and family around quite a bit. Annual family reunions in Utah were a strange (and fun) experience.

27. My best friend as a child and still is Mormon and actually quite a progressive thinker.
I see DUers assuming that the mainstream LDS ignores or even approves of the FLDS behavior when in reality most of them are disgusted by it.

I've been to several wedding receptions and anniversary parties and always admired how content my Mormon friends seemed to be!

These women and children are trapped. Anyone who brings up "freedom of religion" in this case should ask themselves whether they think these people are truly free.

24. Something big was/is brewing. Plans for the Texas compound has been known about
for almost a decade by authorities in AZ and Utah.

State law enforcement has been monitoring Colorado City very closely but have not made a move due to the political fallout from a case with even the slightest weakness. The Texas compound is reported by refugees (I think that term applies here) to have heavy stockpiles of sophisticated weaponry and as the film points out the cult has hundreds of millions of dollars.

Does anyone else have the feeling that this was about to (almost literally) explode? Jeffs was never shy about threatening violence against authorities knowing full well they wouldn't touch him without a diamond-hard case--and now he's in prison--a perfect martyr for the sick, sad old farts who exploited and hurt these women and children.

As a longtime observer of the situation, I KNOW state authorities wouldn't touch them without some rock-solid provocation. Was Jeffs' sister seeing the present?

28. I found the news rather disturbing knowing that the applicable
Attorneys General really, desperately, want to prosecute but don't really dare to from the possible political fallout of a weak case.

That Texas would go ahead with this means that the situation was quite desperate--and they must have solid evidence to back it up. I know all three states' AGs have been working quite closely together on this.

42. Babyland...thank you to Herdin_Cats in an LBN thread about this monstrosity
of a cult.

Most unsettling is the revelation of countless numbers of unmarked baby graves in the canyonlands attached to the FLDS polygamy cult headquartered on the Utah-Arizona border. Local residents call it "Babyland" and law enforcement's response to human rights activists questioning the graves has been that unmarked graves are not illegal. (emphasis added)
