Dog Warden Suspected Of Shooting, Burying 100 Dogs
POSTED: 5:41 pm EDT March 31, 2008
UPDATED: 6:22 pm EDT March 31, 2008

MORGAN COUNTY, Ohio -- An Ohio animal shelter is under investigation after the bodies of more than 100 dogs were found buried nearby.

Dog collars, bones and skulls led investigators to find the remains in Morgan County, reported the Ohio News Network.

A county commissioner said he thought the county's dog warden was euthanizing and cremating pets that were not recovered or adopted.

Investigators suspect that the county worker kept doing what he was accused of doing years ago – shooting hundreds of dogs in the head.

The dog warden is suspended as the investigation continues.

1. My understanding is that they were going to be euthanized anyway.
Against procedure (and against an agreement he made in the past) he shot them in the head instead of giving them an injection.

It may offend some people's delicate sensibilities, but a shot to the head is quicker, cheaper, and absolutey no less humane than an injection.

2. I was going to post something similar..as long as the person is a good shot.
as long as the death can be instant, it doesn't matter the method.

the real issue is why we have so many domesticated animals that are unwanted in the first place.

4. Lone man, restraining a scared animal...
trying to get the perfect headshot.

The AVMA has said that under no circumstance should euthanasia via bullet be used in a shelter scenario.

7. right, good point, like i was saying, it depends on how good a shot the person
is and if the act is instant.

8. Ummm...
you tie the dog up, put the muzzle of a .357 Magnum revolver against the back of the dog's head and pull the trigger.

And yeah, I definitely agree with the AVMA--you can get killed doing this.

5. Without knowing all facts i would agree w/ you
Dead is dead and bullet to the head is just a fast as
any injection .... however all those dog bodies and
not being buried right might cause some real problems
as far as ground water and diseases.

The real problem is the pet owers who do not take care of their
pets .... feral dogs and cats have terrible lives and do not live
very long.

Morgan County is poor and rural and I doubt they have extra
money for a proper dog shelter.

3. Jeff Driggs has never been a veterinarian. So...
how could he have been doing injection euthanasia? Hmmm...those are largely controlled substances. How could those in charge POSSIBLY overlook this minor issue? Because they're fucking idiots.

The Morgan County problem has been going on forever. The place is a shithole. They refuse to care about the animals enough to spend the money to do the right thing.

9. You don't need to be a vet to administer euthanasia
I just looked it up. You need to attend a two-day course to become a Certified Euthanasia Technician.

Then you have to get your shelter certified as a Certified Euthanasia Agency--I didn't find the particulars on that, but just as a wild guess I'd imagine you need to have some way to secure the drugs and needles used in the procedure, you need a second person to hold the animal being euthanized, and you need a proper way to dispose of the carcasses.

In Cumberland County they euthanize a LOT of animals without a veterinarian. Then again, a .357 Magnum is cheaper.
