MSNBC host Keith Olbermann is profiled in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone. In the piece, Olbermann shares his thoughts on right-wing CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck:

A wolf in sheep’s clothing. The very dangerously bigoted guy who is selling himself as a pragmatic philosopher. I don’t think he sees his own bigotry. There’s something about him that suggests that, one night, he’ll say something that will cost him his career in television.

Glenn Beck responded tonight, calling Olbermann an “intolerant ideologue” whose ideas “smack of the same McCarthyism Murrow fought so valiantly against.” Beck added, “Hey, Keith, you’re not saving the world’s democracy; you’re killing it, my friend, by trying to limit the marketplace of ideas to only those that reflect your own.”

Beck said tonight that his numerous inflammatory comments aren’t due to his right-wing point of view, but are merely a sign that he is “not perfect” and “struggl to find the answers to the issues that we face — on my own.” Some lowlights from Beck’s “struggle”:

The anti-gay slur “faggot” is nothing more than “a naughty name.” <1/23/07>

“What happened to the Duke lacrosse team was practically a lynching without the rope. And for the first time in my life, Mr. Oreo Cookie without the chocolate on the outside can understand why people celebrated when O.J. Simpson was acquitted.” <1/15/07, using a racial slur for African-Americans that refers to “being black on the outside and white on the inside”>

Beck is proof that in America anyone with an IQ in double digits or less has a right to to demand that his opinion, no matter how uninformed, unenlightened, and just plain idiotic, be treated on an equal basis as the greatest thinkers of our time. Well I guess if he employees minorities he doesn't talk to them because if I'm not mistaken(and I'm not) Beck had this to say about minorities: "I was thinking about this just last week. I don't have a lot of African-American friends, and I think part of it is because I'm afraid that I would be in an open conversation, and I would say something that somebody would take wrong, and then it would be a nightmare. Am I alone in feeling that?"

I believe this "table turning" is not accidental - and has been studied and applied by think tanks for some time. They hijack our issues, values and turn them against us.

...Keith Olbermann were the President of the United States and George W. Bush was a broadcaster on a minor network who disagreed with some of his views.

This is what the RW always tries to do with these equations, is pretend that oppression has nothing to do with power. Dude, you CANNOT be Senator McCarthy when you're the opposition party. You lack the repressive apparatus necessary to actually create the consequences that his red-baiting produced. It doesn't matter how much he hates Bush or how loudly he expresses that; KO *cannot* do to him what was done to McCarthy's opponents because he is not in the position to do it.

I have to say that if KO's POV was the only one out there, and the one being put into practice by all 3 branches of government, I think I would find his "Special Comments" a little creepy. But the point is, it's not. In fact, for a long time, KO was the only 'legitimate' broadcaster on the air who was willing to criticize the president. By refusing to understand that this makes a difference, basically GB is doing what a lot of right-wingers do, and trying to claim that the vast inequities in the distribution of power and wealth that his party has engineered and is trying to protect don't *really* mean anything. Which is a total @#$! crock, but it's what they have to sell people on in order to keep pretending to be the victims.
