McCain: "51 million homeowners doing what is necessary — working a second job, skipping a vacation"

As the mortgage crisis has rippled through the economy, it has thrust itself to the forefront of the presidential race. But Mr. McCain’s remarks on Tuesday represented a stark tonal shift from the increasing calls for helping homeowners, as he faulted not only borrowers who engaged in risky lending, but suggested that some homeowners engaged in dangerous financial practices.

“Some Americans bought homes they couldn’t afford, betting that rising prices would make it easier to refinance later at more affordable rates,” he said.

Mr. McCain argued that even during the ongoing crisis, the vast majority of mortgage holders continued to make their payments.

“Of those 80 million homeowners, only 55 million have a mortgage at all, and 51 million homeowners are doing what is necessary — working a second job, skipping a vacation and managing their budgets to make their payments on time,” he said. “That leaves us with a puzzling situation: how could 4 million mortgages cause this much trouble for us all?”

7. Are you saying...
McCain should have died somewhere along the line? Perhaps in that POW camp?

If so, that is a revolting attitude.

For Pete's sake, it's an old saying. Are you just back from GDP or something?

27. Listen, this bastard wants to kill millions more innocent people.
This bastard wants us to stay in Iraq for maybe what, 100 years? This bastard made sure that Airbus got the contract over an American company for the newly developed Air Force jet. This bastard lied to protect Abramhoff, he buried e-mails, both personal and to others. This bastard spilled his guts four day, four days mind you, after he was captured for medical care for HIMSELF. He spent time in a hospital reserved for Viet Cong officials. He told the Viet Cong EVERY FUCKING THINK HE KNEW just to save and protect his own hide. He didn't give a fuck about the men/women he might have put in danger. This bastard is blocking the release of the debriefings of other POWs. Families of the missing want those debriefings to see if there's something in them that will help tell them what happened to THEIR loved ones. The minute John McCain got back to this country and got into politics he immediately went on the take and almost landed himself in prison.

Save your lectures, you don't know what you're talking about.

2. "not paying their medical bills, skipping lunch...."
I can't wait until this douchebag can finally be the main focus. It's like a buffet of stupid that's going cold while we have to sit at the kid's table and watch cousin Hillary slice us up bologna.

20. Yes! That's exactly what he said. Do you remember when his father didn't know what
a cash register scanner was, while during a gas crisis he was zipping along with his expensive gas guzzling cigarette boat?

Out of touch seems to tame of an expression to describe these people.

11. Reminds me of my conservative brother.
He had a cleaning person that he admired because she worked three jobs. Meanwhile, he was too lazy to mow his own lawn so he moved into a condo.

President Discusses Strengthening Social Security in Nebraska
Qwest Center Omaha Arena
Omaha, Nebraska

President George W. Bush talks with Mary Mornin, a secretary at St. Robert Bellarmine School in Omaha, Neb., Jerry Rempe, quality assurance manager at Omaha Steaks, and Amanda Temoshek, owner of Heartland Campaign Management, during a conversation on strengthening Social Security in Omaha, Neb., Friday, Feb. 4, 2005. White House photo by Eric Draper

Mary is with us. Mary Mornin. How are you, Mary?

MS. MORNIN: I'm fine.

THE PRESIDENT: Good. Okay, Mary, tell us about yourself.

MS. MORNIN: Okay, I'm a divorced, single mother with three grown, adult children. I have one child, Robbie, who is mentally challenged, and I have two daughters.

THE PRESIDENT: Fantastic. First of all, you've got the hardest job in America, being a single mom.

MS. MORNIN: Thank you. (Applause.)

THE PRESIDENT: You and I are baby boomers.

MS. MORNIN: Yes, and I am concerned about -- that the system stays the same for me.

THE PRESIDENT: Right.

MS. MORNIN: But I do want to see change and reform for my children because I realize that we will be in trouble down the road.

THE PRESIDENT: It's an interesting point, and I hear this a lot -- will the system be the same for me? And the answer is, absolutely. One of the things we have to continue to clarify to people who have retired or near retirement -- you fall in the near retirement.

MS. MORNIN: Yes, unfortunately, yes. (Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I don't know. I'm not going to tell your age, but you're one year younger than me, and I'm just getting started. (Laughter.)

MS. MORNIN: Okay, okay.

THE PRESIDENT: I feel great, don't you?

MS. MORNIN: Yes, I do.

THE PRESIDENT: I remember when I turned 50, I used to think 50 was really old. Now I think it's young, and getting ready to turn 60 here in a couple of years, and I still feel young. I mean, we are living longer, and people are working longer, and the truth of the matter is, elderly baby boomers have got a lot to offer to our society, and we shouldn't think about giving up our responsibilities in society. (Applause.) Isn't that right?

MS. MORNIN: That's right.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, but nevertheless, there's a certain comfort to know that the promises made will be kept by the government.

MS. MORNIN: Yes.

THE PRESIDENT: And so thank you for asking that. You don't have to worry.

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

MS. MORNIN: Not much. Not much.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, hopefully, this will help you get you sleep to know that when we talk about Social Security, nothing changes.

MS. MORNIN: Okay, thank you.

THE PRESIDENT: That's great.

19. "doing what is necessary"
And there in lies the problem. Why is it that 40 years ago people could pay a mortgage, raise their kids, pay for their medical and dental needs, send the kids to college and save for retirement on only one income but we can't do that today?

The industry was set for a default rate of only 2%. Thus companies where trading debt assuming a 3 to 5 times lower risk. It's not that hard to understand John.
