***********Join the Online Rally for Healthy Families !!*************
Working people shouldn't have to choose between taking care of their health or a sick child, and a paycheck-or even a job. But in reality, millions of working people are forced to make those decisions. In fact, half of workers don't have a single paid sick day.

Join the Online Rally for Healthy Families! Send a message to Congress that working people need a basic standard of paid sick days.

www.everyonegetssick.org

Currently, there are no state or federal laws that require workplaces to guarantee paid sick days. It's time that our elected leaders update our labor laws to reflect the realities of today's working people and their families. The Healthy Families Act, introduced in the U.S. Congress, would establish a new standard of up to seven paid sick days per year for workers to recover from their own illness, or to care for sick family members.

Join the Online Rally for Healthy Families at www.everyonegetssick.org. Most of us can't make it to Washington to urge our members of Congress to support paid sick days. That's why we're rallying online. Join us in front of the U.S. Capitol building and voice your concerns. Hear from more than 20 community leaders and workers, and from our elected leaders about the need to pass the Healthy Families Act. You can share your story or upload your photo too.

Together, let's call on Congress to support our working families!

2. Together, let's KICK this!
:kick:

Figure it this way: this kind of movement will bear fruit eventually. It's going to have to. Just as there's eventually going to HAVE TO BE some sort of answer on health care.

Especially as our baby boomer generation ages to the point of longterm sickness and infirmity and mass bankruptcy. It's going to have to be solved sooner or later.

8. He can't. He does homecare and even though he works 56 hours a week
for the same company, 52 weeks a year and has been for over 13 years, technically he is a "temp."

The last time he got a raise was 3 years ago, and when he asked recently, they told him he was lucky he wasn't getting a 10% pay cut like other nursing agencies were doing.

10. I don't understand. He can't spread the word, or share his story, or help this effort
in any way?

If we can't/won't take action, then we can't complain.

It's time to speak up!

16. that's exactly WHY we must act on these events that have been organized.
NO, he can't get anywhere with his employer, and neither can millions of other people.

We need to begin to understand that we can't put on our rugged individualist outfit and do it all alone.

We are in this together, and that is precisely what this event is about.

There are NO individual solutions.

We're all in this together.

I wish people would look at the website, and find things they can join in with!!

Or, we can keep complaining, and getting nowhere.

14. My Daughter is an RN...
and many of them are overworked and underpayed, but thankfully for her she has a good employer, she is on paid maternity leave right now. There are MANY options out there for Nurses. So maybe if your boyfriend and his fellow Nurses deciced to take a stand, his employer would have a change of heart.

There are links on the sight in the OP www.everyonegetssick.org for him to share his story, take action, spread the word, tell others and more. Besides, Nursing jobs are usually good jobs, but what about the low wage workers? They are the ones who usually have NO BENEFITS, so while helping himself he would also be helping others!!

We MUST get past this idea that it's only about us!!

Thanks for reminding us about all the various parts of that website, and that there are others to consider.

than its predecessors, this bill has been sitting around Congress since 2004 with no action. Maybe this time they will at least debate it?

The majority of bills never make it out of committee. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned.

12. Thanks, dajoki! NOW... look at this....
3.06.08 - DC Becomes Second in Nation to Guarantee Paid Sick Days
On March 4th, thousands of DC workers gained the right to paid sick and safe days. The hard work of the DC Paid Sick and Safe Days Coalition, which includes unions, workers, and advocates, has made the District the second jurisdiction in the nation to guarantee workers paid time off to recover from illness or care for a sick family member. And DC’s new law is the first to ensure that workers dealing with domestic violence can take paid time off for court appearances or to seek necessary services. More

There are ways to build power, and make our voices heard.
